this bug has been introduced recently as it wasn't present in builds from ~2 weeks ago.

I don't see any problem with the testcase or peepo.co.uk on Windows XP, so maybe only an issue on Mac.

now seems that <use> is totally broken on camino and mozilla nightlies in os x

Please file another bug and mark it as blocking this one. I'm seeing the <use> breakage on Windows, but haven't seen this bug as originally reported. It's best not to morph bugs between different issues as they appear.
