(spun off bug 318792 comment 10)
If you read a newsgroup, and quit afterwards, leaving the account expanded you will see wrong unread count for the last read group after restart.
STR:
Go to a group with 1 unread, read it and quit, it will show 1 unread initially until you hover. Go to a group with 4 unread, read one and quit, after restart it shows 7 until hover, after which it shows 3 as expected.
On branch it seems account expanded state is not remembered after restart so you will only see the wrong count temporarily as the groups are checked for new msgs after expanding the account. You also see it if a the group is marked as favorite folder. (On trunk, account state is remembered, so it's easier to see.)

is this fixed in tomorrow's build? I checked in some fixes to newsgroup counts this morning under bug 298737

Seems to be working OK for me with 2b1-1223, bearing in mind the always-collapsed-on-startup issue.
