All of what you describe is consistent with bug 393579 (although bug 371284 is not). If you have the headers expanded, close the mail window and reopen it, do you see the twisty (for a line with a comma)?

Eyal, your version is slightly too old, AFAICT the fix went in on July 22nd. Also, I guess the modern theme will still be broken, but that needs a big overhaul anyway.
