The Sunbird start page says: "Add-ons are small pieces of software that can add new features or tiny tweaks to your Sunbird. They can add new search engines or dictionaries in other languages" According to bug 363384, Sunbird doesn't use search engines. I'm not sure about dictionaries though. That's the same issue as bug 374064, only for sunbird.
