In TB 2's header pane (both preview & standalone), some fields like subject & date are focusable (after fix for Bug 364376, from & to fields will also be focusable, adding to the relevance of this bug here). For subject & date, the sole purpose of these being focusable is that user can select & copy the text. My subject text is "hello world", and I want to copy "world" only, using keyboard only. So I <tab> into subject field, press <cursor-left> hoping to get rid of blue highlighting and then suddenly, as a keyboard user, I am left with no visible focus at all: Not good, and very difficult to select specific substring of subject string. Bug: The cursor going through the text is invisible (there IS a cursor, as you can see when you use <shift> while cursoring). Expected: Cursor should be there and always be visible as long as header field has focus.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. <tab> from msg list into header pane --> focus & blue highlight is on subject line
2. press cursor left
3. try to cursor to a specific position within subject line in order to highlight substring of subject for copy/paste
Actual Results:
no visual indication of focus; cursor is working, but useless as it is invisible

Expected Results:
there should always be a visual indication of focus;
cursor should be visible if header fields have focus
version 3.0a1pre (2008040302) cursor remains visible on hello world test as above. WinXP SP2. Cannot confirm.
2.0.0.12 works for me too.

a) bug is present in TB 2.0.0.14
b) bug is only half fixed in TB 3a1 shredder: cursor is now visible, but not blinking. Should blink. OS default behaviour (at least on Win) for cursoring non-editable, but copy-able text is blinking cursor, because non-blinking cursor is hard to find on screen and might be regarded as part of a character or as the pipe-character (|).

Forgot to mention that in this bug, we are looking at the header pane of a /received/ msg (e.g. in msg preview pane of inbox folder). You won't see the bug in msg composition mode, obviously.

This bug should be confirmed, as both aspects of the problem persist, depending on the version.

a) in TB 2.0.0.21, cursor is missing (invisible) when cursoring e.g. through the subject display of a received(!) message

b) in TB 3, with same scenario as in a, cursor is visible, but does not blink, which again makes it hard to find, i. e. almost invisible.

This bug was originally reported against TB 2, where the problem persists.
Comment #3 adds a similar problem which exists in TB 3, where the cursor is not missing but it doesn't blink. I have updated the summary of this bug to better reflect the two aspects of this bug, as explained in comment #3 (see screenshots in attachment 328872 [details]). If you want a separate bug for non-blinking cursor in TB 3, let me know.
Summary: Missing cursor in mail header pane subject, from, to etc. (Keyboard accessability, navigation) → Missing cursor [TB2] / cursor does not blink [TB3] in mail header pane subject, from, to etc. (Keyboard accessability, navigation)

The issue is that you are the only one to see it. All others here have said that your steps worked for them, meaning that they don't see the bug. We need more information to confirm - as for now you are the only one seeing it :-(

Do you have extensions ? do you see the bug when your extensions are disabled ?
I've seen this lot of times when using TB2 but but not seeing it long time ago for trunk, probably it was there for a1pre versions.

I have all my extensions disabled (-safe-mode).
I think there are some misunderstandings and/or testers have not read the new summary as explained in comment #6. Here is an easier test case to confirm this bug (well, it's 2 bugs, one against TB2 and another one against TB3!)

Do the following steps for A) TB2 and B) TB3 Shredder and make sure you differentiate your results between the two!

0. Before you do anything, make sure you are using the latest versions of both TB2 and TB3 Shredder.

1. In TB's main mail window (inbox), look at the preview of a received mail with the subject "Hello World" (make sure it's a /received/ mail!). Look at the header pane of the mail preview.
2. With the mouse cursor, hover over the subject "Hello World". The mouse pointer will turn into a caret to indicate that you can highlight text.
3. (Single-Left-)Click in the middle of the subject (between "Hello" and "World")

Actual Results:

A) In TB Version 2.0.0.22 (20090605)
In Thunderbird 2(only!), there is NO visible cursor/caret at all (bug, in TB2 only!).
Try Shift+Cursor right to see where the invisible cursor actually is (will correctly highlight the beginning of the word "world").

B) In Shredder/3.0b3pre (20090627)
In Thunderbird 3/Shredder's current nightly, there IS a visible cursor/caret showing up between "hello" and "world"(ok), BUT the cursor DOES NOT BLINK (bug, in TB3 only!).

I can reproduce both bugs every time, with all addons disabled, on two entirely different machines with different profiles. I am also aware that this bug is "minor" for a reason.
Summary: Missing cursor [TB2] / cursor does not blink [TB3] in mail header pane subject, from, to etc. (Keyboard accessability, navigation) → Missing cursor [TB2] / cursor does not blink [TB3] in received mail header pane subject and date (Keyboard accessability, navigation)
