User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.3) Gecko/20060601 Firefox/2.0.0.3 (Ubuntu-edgy)
Build Identifier: Thunderbird 2.0 beta 2
If you save an email with attachments locally (as an .eml file using Thunderbird's menus), then you can correctly open the email again in Thunderbird, but the attachments cannot be opened.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Send yourself an email with an attachment (.doc, .pdf, whatever)
2.Save the email locally using File->Save As...->File (Ctrl S)
3.Open the locally saved file using Thunderbird's menu item File->Open Saved Message...
4.Double click on the attachment in the resulting message window (or try "Save As..." in the contextual menu for the attachment)
Actual Results:
Thunderbird cannot open the attachment. If you try and "Save As..." you get eventually "Unable to save the attachment. Please check your file name and try again later."
Expected Results:
The attachment should open if double-clicked. It should be saveable to disk via the Save As... contextual menu item.
This is not new. I don't think Thunderbird has ever been able to open attachments in locally saved email. The attachment really is in the locally saved email: the saved email is a message/rfc822 file, with extension .eml, and examining it with a text editor shows that the attachment is there. Thunderbird doesn't know how to open the attachment.

Can you attach the .eml file that displays this bug?

The bug occurs (for me) with absolutely any email attachment, so this example is not special.

Can reproduce on Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.4pre) Gecko/20070408 Thunderbird/2.0.0.0pre ID:2007040803
Seems like a dupe of bug 351064.

This bug is definitely OS-specific. (I just tried a Windows machine, and did not experience this bug with Thunderbird 1.5 on Windows.) I experience it only on linux (and have tried Thunderbird 1.5 and 2.0 b1 and rc1). This makes me think it might be different from bug 351064.

Correction to my last comment: I can't now fully reproduce this on 2.0 release-candidate 1 on linux.
More specifically, using 2.0 rc1, double-clicking the .doc attachment didn't open it, but the "Save As..." contextual menu item is working fine for the sample email with attachment that I supplied.
I don't know if something changed between b2 and rc1, or whether it never was 100% reproducible.
works here both 2 and 3
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.8.1.16) Gecko/20080708 Lightning/0.9pre Thunderbird/2.0.0.16 - Build ID: 2008070808
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.0.2pre) Gecko/2008072303 Shredder/3.0a2pre ID:2008072303
I think it has been solved as show in bug 372135, probable dupe
If the attachment is .eml though, then is still on and is bug 351064
same goes for bug 371379, I'd wfm both or dup to 351064
