What version of Thunderbird are you using? Do you see any error within the error console? Do you really have to save the attachment before forwarding it to another person? Which is your default mode for forwarding a message (inline or attachment)?
Version : 1.5.0.12
There is no error in the console.I just get "Error while saving. Please check the extension"
I could not view the attachment. So, I thought of saving it and then viewing it and ended up in the error.

It's still unclear for me what are you doing between step 1 and 2 of your initial post. Do you save the message and open the saved message afterwards to forward it?
Let me explain this a bit in detail.
Assume that one of my colleague saves a mail ( I do not know the reason for this). The saved mail has attachments. When such a "SAVED" mail is forwarded to me, I am unable to view the attachments. So, when I try to save the attachments, I get the above mentioned errors.
Hope this is a bit more clear.
Thanks
