I finally have to close Firefox to get the tabs to stop opening. you have probably setup firefox as the default handler for .doc .rtf, see in Tools>Options>Content>Filetypes>download actions if you have them listed with "action => open with Firefox" and change action to the right application probably dupe of Bug 369052
