Since bug 359134 is fixed, you probably can get a better behavior by setting bug offline.autoDetect true and network.autodial-helper.enabled false. Tried it?

Martin, I've tried your solution but this not work for me, running 2.0.0.6 in XP

Trued offline.autoDetect works fine at me with Thunderbird 2.0.0.6 (20070801). I do not have a network.autodial-helper property and likely no auto dialer. Offline autodetection should be offered for selection under Properties->Extended->Offline-Settings (Auto/Previous/Ask/Always) and may furthermore be desireable as default setting so that it can be selected without installing the AboutConfig extension.

Seems fine to me ether now, forgot about other interfaces which is up but not pointed to WAN.

No need for the AboutConfig extension any more. The functionality has been in the normal thunderbird distribution a long time now (Options > Advanced > General Config Editor) I think the plan is to make it enabled by default, but the feature was too new for 2.0, and only working (well) on some platforms.

Bug 464577 - Offline status does not change due to toolkit.networkmanager.disable defaulting to true Bug 438842 - Browser does not enter offline mode when connection is dropped I think there's a more root bug though.

I think this depends on bug 464577, and bug 424626 has some interesting extra information.

Thanks a lot for this report, finally Thunderbird automatically figures whether I am offline or online - previously, I had it restart Thunderbird almost each time I switched wireless, or suspended/resumed the system, as Thunderbird would otherwise be unable to connect to my server. What's the reason offline.autoDetect still defaults to false on Linux?

Somewhen during the last year, this stopped working. So now I'm back in the state where when I change from wired to wireless network, I have to either wait 5min or manually put Thunderbird into offline and then again into online mode, such that it reconnects to the server. If I won't do that, it will try to stick to the old connections, which of course donÄt work anymore when the IP changed. It seems that the functionality behind autoDetect was removed. Has anything been added as a replacement? This is a pretty bad regression. I don't understand why Linux is supported so badly by Thunderbird - or is the situation just as bad on the other platforms? :(
