User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; de; rv:1.8.1.6) Gecko/20070730 SUSE/2.0.0.6-2.1 Firefox/2.0.0.6 Build Identifier: version 2.0.0.6 (20070801) Thunderbird should check out whether there is any connection to the internet at startup and go offline if there is not any. At the moment I do always have to click through dozens of error messages, one for each account. If you forget to check 'remember password' only once when clicking through Thunderbird will forget it so that it needs to be reentered on subsequent startups. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. interrupt connection to the internet 2. start Thunderbird 3. Actual Results: * dozens of error messages, one for each account * all passwords have to be reentered if the user does not check "remember password" for each accounts error message Expected Results: * offline mode automatically activated if no connection to the internet * no such complaints on startup if offline * multiple errors on receive/send all should be combined into a single message box * the 'remember password' switch should be activated by deafult
Since bug 359134 is fixed, you probably can get a better behavior by setting bug offline.autoDetect true and network.autodial-helper.enabled false. Tried it?
Version: unspecified → 2.0
Martin, I've tried your solution but this not work for me, running 2.0.0.6 in XP
Trued offline.autoDetect works fine at me with Thunderbird 2.0.0.6 (20070801). I do not have a network.autodial-helper property and likely no auto dialer. Offline autodetection should be offered for selection under Properties->Extended->Offline-Settings (Auto/Previous/Ask/Always) and may furthermore be desireable as default setting so that it can be selected without installing the AboutConfig extension.
Seems fine to me ether now, forgot about other interfaces which is up but not pointed to WAN.
No need for the AboutConfig extension any more. The functionality has been in the normal thunderbird distribution a long time now (Options > Advanced > General Config Editor) I think the plan is to make it enabled by default, but the feature was too new for 2.0, and only working (well) on some platforms.
isn't offline.autoDetect=true the default? Elmar, WFM using what will be become thunderbird 3 Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.1a2pre) Gecko/2008072800 Shredder/3.0a2pre
(In reply to comment #6) > isn't offline.autoDetect=true the default? Only for windows so far, though we should look in to enabling it at least for linux too.
Updating since this is just a default preferences problem then (confirmed default off here on tb3/linux). was: summary: never ending complaints if started offline component: general version: 2
Status: UNCONFIRMED → NEW
Component: General → Preferences
Ever confirmed: true

http://mxr.mozilla.org/comm-central/source/mail/app/profile/all-thunderbird.js#280 IIRC there are still problems with the linux autodetection :( Or did that get fixed again?
(In reply to comment #9) > IIRC there are still problems with the linux autodetection :( > Or did that get fixed again? i forgot about that. Bug 464577 - Offline status does not change due to toolkit.networkmanager.disable defaulting to true Bug 438842 - Browser does not enter offline mode when connection is dropped I think there's a more root bug though.

No longer depends on: 577763
I think this depends on bug 464577, and bug 424626 has some interesting extra information.

Thanks a lot for this report, finally Thunderbird automatically figures whether I am offline or online - previously, I had it restart Thunderbird almost each time I switched wireless, or suspended/resumed the system, as Thunderbird would otherwise be unable to connect to my server. What's the reason offline.autoDetect still defaults to false on Linux?
Somewhen during the last year, this stopped working. So now I'm back in the state where when I change from wired to wireless network, I have to either wait 5min or manually put Thunderbird into offline and then again into online mode, such that it reconnects to the server. If I won't do that, it will try to stick to the old connections, which of course donÄt work anymore when the IP changed. It seems that the functionality behind autoDetect was removed. Has anything been added as a replacement? This is a pretty bad regression. I don't understand why Linux is supported so badly by Thunderbird - or is the situation just as bad on the other platforms? :(
