We can better use the existing XBL to help knock a few layers off and although it won't do much for perf, having the border on the engine button match the text box/endcap and be easier to style would be nice too.

The engine button is a mess -- both markup-wise and visually (the Winstripe version least; esp. in the glowing state it's too noisy). If the visual appearance could be streamlined a bit (e.g. as in Pinstripe), that would probably also ease the code cleanup.

Code-wise I absolutely agree - the endcap stuff shows there's about a .5-.9% Ts win to be had there, but I actually kind of like the current look on winstripe (though not enough to keep the stack hack around for another release ;)). I'll play around with a few ideas I have for that and post some mockups.

Note that I did some cleanup in bug 398020 -- not sure if you planned to do more.
