I tried to sync my calendar with my server but I think I don't know much about the current calendar protocols used by Sunbird (caldav, ics). I think most people are not familiar with these protocols either. Worse, I think most servers don't offer support for these protocols.
I actually expected to be able to use protocols such as the popular FTP, SFTP or SCP. I think these would be much better. With one click, Sunbird could extract the calendar as XML, zip it and send it to a remote server, or the other way around: download off the server the zip file, extract it and import it.
Reproducible: Always

FTP already works using an ftp protocol url.
supporting scp would also include sftp support, since both go over ssh. This is something that could be done by creating a scheme to read and write via scp, which can be done as an extension. Maybe necko even supports something like this.
OS: Windows XP → All
Hardware: PC → All
Summary: Sync with remote server using other protocols → Create scp scheme to allow ics provider to sync via ssh [extension fodder]
