Firefox Portable disables history and caching in order to reduce wear on flash drives. (Paranoid end users probably do this as well.) The Places address auto-completion feature doesn't work properly when history is disabled.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Deselect the "Remember visted pages..." option
2. Select address bar and start typing
Actual Results:
No autocompletion results for bookmarks. (Tags do work.)
Expected Results:
Autocompletion should be performed against bookmarks and tags (but not history).
Even with history enabled, I've noticed that Places won't find unvisited bookmarks. (e.g. from an auto-upgraded bookmarks.html). It appears that Places isn't so much "unified bookmarks and history" as it is "bookmarks are a part of history."
I hope that the intent isn't to leave this alone figuring that eventually people will revisit all their bookmarks and it will "just work" afterward. The feature loses most of it's impact if it doesn't work immediately after an upgrade from 2.0. Since Places is intended to make it easier to deal with very large bookmark collections, it's also likely that people won't visit all their bookmarks within the N day history window. While I understand the Firefox Portable isn't Mozilla's concern, it would be nice not to hobble it unless absolutely necessary.

Aw hell. I figured this was a duplicate but couldn't find it until *after* I posted it.

Reopening. I just noticed that bug 367386 was marked fixed in February but I'm still seeing the problem in December. This is either a separate issue or a regression.

autocomplete currently does not return unvisited bookmarks, so this depends on Bug 393570

Bug 451915 - move Firefox/Places bugs to Firefox/Bookmarks and History. Remove all bugspam from this move by filtering for the string "places-to-b-and-h".
In Thunderbird 3.0b, you do that as follows:
Tools | Message Filters
Make sure the correct account is selected. Click "New"
Conditions: Body contains places-to-b-and-h
Change the action to "Delete Message".
Select "Manually Run" from the dropdown at the top.
Click OK.
Select the filter in the list, make sure "Inbox" is selected at the bottom, and click "Run Now". This should delete all the bugspam. You can then delete the filter.
