User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9b2) Gecko/2007121120 Firefox/3.0b2 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9b2) Gecko/2007121120 Firefox/3.0b2 When I click on web link in the main body of an e-mail (Thunderbird) e.g. www.dhl.co.uk, before loading the web page Firefox 3.0b2 downgrades to Firefox 2 and the Mozilla web page announcing I have upgraded to the latest version of Firefox (Firefox 2) appears. Firefox then continues as Firefox 2 and all my passwords etc. have been forgotten. I can then of course re-upgrade to Firefox 3.0b2. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Click on web link in body of e-mail 2. 3. Actual Results: Firefox 3.0b2 'upgrades' to Firefox 2 Expected Results: Firefox 3.0b2 should have stayed as Firefox 3.0b2
When I re-upgrade to Firefox 3.0b2 all my passwords etc. are remembered again.

Are you sure this is software update's doing? It could be that you simply have Firefox 2 and Firefox 3 Beta 2 installed (in different directories), and Firefox 2 is set as your default browser.
No - I have uninstalled Firefox 2. Firefox 3 is default because it is the browser that loads when I click the icon and there is no message saying 'Firefox is not your default browser' etc. which comes up with IE and Safari. Anyway, I have never had this problem with any previous updates of Firefox and I have been using Firefox since the first beta version.
> there is no message saying 'Firefox is not your default browser' That message only appears if Firefox is not the default browser AND a checkbox in prefs is checked. (On trunk, the checkbox is in Tools > Options > Advanced > General).
True - and I didn't have this box checked. However, the fact that I am not being informed of this does not make it true. And in any case, the situation now is that clicking on a link in an e-mail does not work at all. In other words Firefox 3, or rather my automatic installation of Firefox 3, does not seem to be set up to load automatically from links in e-mails.
It seems none of this is a problem IF I have already opened Firefox before clicking an e-mail link. However, if Firefox is not already open then it seems to struggle to open correctly / at all from an e-mail link.
I can confirm this on my XP system. I actually first noticed it when closing, then opening again but couldn't reproduce. However, now it is reproducible by (1)clicking on link as per OP (2) Typing a URL into Start > Run with FX as the default browser. I did not, however, uninstall FX2, but rather installed FX3B2 over it. I have two folders under Program Files, one for "Firefox" and one for "Firefox 3 Beta 2." My guess is that the new beta does not register itself properly as the default application for http:// links. If I then set B2 as the default browser in Set Program Access and Defaults, it works. (interestingly, FX2 is not even listed there)
I just noticed bug 409203, which is the exact same thing. This one has more information, so that one's probably best off as a dupe.
So... This is still an issue for Beta 3. I have upgraded and, unless Firefox is already open, web links in e-mails do not work. Surely other people must have this problem as I am not doing anything out of the ordinary.
Product: Firefox → Toolkit
do you you still see this problem? bug 409203 has since been closed WFM.

note: this shouldn't happen anymore when using 3.0.12 or 3.5 since bug 313057 and bug 485624 landed. I'd like confirmation from the reporter if possible and if the response is it now works or there is no response this should be duped to bug 313057.
