In the current state it's not possible to use a different column set for special folders inside the Library. Instead the same columns which are set for normal bookmark folders are used. It's a bit odd because folders e.g. Tags should show other, more descriptive information (also see mockup on bug 393512).
Further it would be nice if each special folder could have it's own stored column set.
There should also be a default column set for new profiles be defined.

This would be a nice feature. Even it will not block Firefox 3.1 but something for the wanted list?

Not something we really have time to get in on 3.1's schedule, but it would be very useful.

Bug 451915 - move Firefox/Places bugs to Firefox/Bookmarks and History. Remove all bugspam from this move by filtering for the string "places-to-b-and-h".
In Thunderbird 3.0b, you do that as follows:
Tools | Message Filters
Make sure the correct account is selected. Click "New"
Conditions: Body contains places-to-b-and-h
Change the action to "Delete Message".
Select "Manually Run" from the dropdown at the top.
Click OK.
Select the filter in the list, make sure "Inbox" is selected at the bottom, and click "Run Now". This should delete all the bugspam. You can then delete the filter.
