As you can see, all Bold+Italic Persian (Arabic) parts look like some random glyphs. I'm gonna attach the render of fx2.0, and make a test case too.
Flags: blocking1.9?
Correct render in Fx2.0

Basic test case, with *very interesting* result!

And how the testcase renders on Jan 12th nightly build on my ubuntu 7.04 box.
Summary: Italic Arabic text render makes garbage → Bold/Italic Arabic text renders as garbage

Here are another screenshot (of parseek.com) which arabic text doesn't have any joining applied. I think these two bugs have the same source. If not, tell me to open another bug for this. Again, nightly build 2008011204.

Although attached testcase works fine after removing ttf-freefont package, I still get wrong render for Bold+Italic text in http://www.nic.ir/ . I'll try to create a new testcase. Simon: Could it be because of another font?

Plain and Bold texts are OK, but Bold+Italic is rendered badly. Also, I'm gonna report the joining problem of parseek.com separately.

And here are how Italic arabic text is rendered as Plain.
And here is the correct render of the that page.
Seems the news.parseek.com problem has been solved in the upgrade, 2008011304.
Font selection problem, probably.

If you could test it and report back here the results, that would be helpful.
(In reply to comment #15) > If possible, could you please try this build? I just run it, and Italic doesn't work on Arabic text at all and is ignored, so all I see is Plain and Bold text, which all are rendered correctly with DejaVu Sans. Thanks Bill.
This bug is fixed now, right?

No. Current trunk updates behave same as Bill's build. Italic property is completely ignored, but Bold is fine.
I think that's bug 372404. This bug was about Arabic text rendering as garbage. That doesn't happen anymore?
(In reply to comment #19) > I think that's bug 372404. Yes, seems so. > This bug was about Arabic text rendering as garbage. > That doesn't happen anymore? No, it doesn't. Thanks roc. Thanks again Bill.
