User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9b2) Gecko/2007121120 Firefox/3.0b2 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9b2) Gecko/2007121120 Firefox/3.0b2 The new version of autocomplete in Firefox 3 searches for matching urls in a counterintuitive fashion. When you type something in the url bar, you expect that autocomplete offerings will begin with the letter that you just typed. For example, if I type "g", I might expect gizmodo.com to be offered as an autocomplete option, based on my past browsing history. What is actually offered is: "TechnoloGy News - CNET News.com" *note the emphasis on the g in technology*, followed by "xkcd A webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math, and languaGe" *note the g in language, about 20 characters into the string* followed by EnGadget followed by Gizmodo (at least it appears in the list!) followed by NeweGg Google, which actually begins with a g, appears 10th in the list Two characters (Gi) must be typed before Gizmodo appears at the top of the list, and then the next few choices are urls that happen to have a gi in them *somewhere*. An even worse example is weather.com. I have to type "weather." before ANY url with weather.com actually appears at the top of the list, because I've also CNN, which has the word weather in its title - 7 words into the title! Essentially, autocomplete is useless in this case, as I now have to look through the list and navigate with my keyboard or mouse to choose the right option. Ignoring autocomplete altogether would actually be faster for weather.com. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Visit some urls that contain common substrings, such as cnn.com and weather.com, or gizmodo.com and a bunch of sites that contain a g somewhere 2. Try to type weather.com into the url bar 3. Watch the wrong sites come up Actual Results: The desired site is not at the top of the autocomplete list until many letters have been typed Expected Results: the most likely site(s) (which should begin with the letter you are typing, not simply contain them) should appear at the top.
