How is this name displayed in the account manager?
Is the umlaut part of your Mac user's name (which gets prefilled into account settings on creating a new Mozilla profile) or did you enter it manually into account manager?
In the account manager I have the same bizarre character in front of the umlaut.
No, my Mac user's name has no umlaut. I have entered this name in Thunderbird 2 manually (there it is displayed correct) and use the same account now for Thunderbird 3.
Hm, maybe. I have made a little test. I created a new account in TB3, with the same settings. In this new account I don't have this problem. Than I deleted this new account and changed the charset of the affected account to UTF-8 and ISO-8859-15. Than the phenomenon disappeared. So I think it has to do with the usage of an old account from TB2 in TB3.
This is the same as bug 401358, issue being send and receive vs utf8 or other encoding. I tested there with similar results in tb 2 and 3. Somehow I bet these are dupes of an older ..
and probably related if not dupe to bug 224391

Using Thunderbird 3.0b2, names with a german umlaut are reproducably cut off including that character. I've tested that in a newsgroup with the characters ä, Ä, ö, Ö, ü and Ü. It's always the same.
The header view in the message pane normally displays a grey star after the name. In the case of an example name like "Jürgen" it only displays J*. The "From" column in the thread view is empty, no characters are displayed at all. Other 'special' characters seem to work without problems.

To bug opener:
Same problem as Bug 468351, isn't it?
View mail mail source, check mail headers, check charset of Content-Type:.

Hm, maybe. But I don't have this problem anymore. I deleted the concerned account and recreated it. After that the problem was gone. So I can't check if Bug 468351 has solved the problem.

When will it be possible to use german umlaute (mutated vowels) like ä, Ä, ö, Ö, ü, Ü? There are many names, who are to write with. These vowels are existing in the www since 2004 and til today there's no possibility to create them in the header...
