I suggest using the form: [icon 1] [search query] [icon 2] for all search entries. Note that there shouldn't be any "Clear search" button, nor "search" label before the text entry; only the three elements mentioned before.
* Icon 1 would be the icon which represents what is being searched. For example, bookmarks sidebar search would show the bookmarks icon (the used in Boomarks > Show All Bookmarks...).
* Search query would be: Search [what is being searched]... For example, for bookmarks sidebar search would show: "Search bookmarks...". The entry would remove that text when new text is written, and would fill the text box again with it when the user clears the text box.
* Icon 2 would be a unique icon among all entries, a common magnifying glass.
This are all the searches I've found:
* Bookmarks sidebar search
* History sidebar search
* Find search
* Quick find search
* Applications search
* Cookies search
* Extension search
* Help search
* Library search
* Remembered passwords search
The Web search entry (the one usually present at the right of the location bar) should not follow this rules.
Reproducible: Always

Entry text should be 50% of the foreground color and 50% of the background color when showing the: "Search [what]...", and 100% foreground color when the user writes the entry.
Pressing <Enter> and clicking the search button should start the search.

Typo: Pressing <Enter> or clicking the search button would start the search.
The search text foreground text color would be 50% foreground color and 50% background color when user clears its entry.

I'm setting this as a duplicate of bug 388811, since they both hope to achieve the same thing (although the UI details here are a little different).
