I don't know. The call for this method in the spot the crash reports indicate has been submitted by you for bug 365973. Since this does not always happen, I see two possibilities:
1. It is timing related and has to do with one window (the viewer) getting closed and a second (the compose window) being opened, or
2. It has to do with the doc inconsistencies we're battelling in bug 405951 somehow.
