User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9b5) Gecko/2008032620 Firefox/3.0b5
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9b5) Gecko/2008032620 Firefox/3.0b5
When I start Firefox 3b5, it takes between 30 to 60 seconds before the window opens up. During that time, I see the disk light indicator always on meaning the disk is swapping.
I used perform to see what was going on and for some reason, firefox opens all the fonts files in my /font directory (i have a lot of fonts) and I see also activity on my swap file.
I get this problem at any time, even after a clean boot with no other applications opened.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:

Do you get this also in the Firefox safemode ?

or with a new, additional test profile ?

Asking the obvious questions:
How much RAM do you have in this system? (and how much of that is free?)
How much memory does Firefox end up using once loaded?

I'm trying it now. I'll try for a couple of days. Once it actually loads, when I close it and open it again, it's normal for a while.

OK, reproduced it with a different profile.
I see firefox opening every single font and produces a lot of activity on pagefile.sys. It also generates many K of pagefaults.
I have no such issue with IE7

This part is normal. After the first time anything is loaded off the HD the OS will usually try to cache it in RAM so as to not have to load it off the HD again for a while. This is one of the top reasons why more RAM makes for a speedier computer.

Exactly how many is "a lot"?

hmm, 3900 fonts. Hadn't actually counted them before.
Is there some parameter to set in Firefox to ask it only to load standard internet fonts?

Just popped open a WinXPsp2 box... 72 fonts in there. (no Office) Yeah, 3900 qualifies as a bit more than "a lot". :p
Firefox shouldn't need an option to not load everything it sees. It's obviously not expecting to have this many, and probably should be made smart enough to only load what it might actually use. An option might be needed to allow it to load the whole pile, but that shouldn't be the default.

Let me know if you want me to apply a fix to see if that's really the cause.

No reply, INCOMPLETE. Please retest with Firefox 3.6.10 or later and a new profile (http://support.mozilla.com/kb/Managing+profiles). If you continue to see this issue with the newest firefox and a new profile, then please comment on this bug.

A new massive discussion on how to fix startup font loading has begun in bug 600713, so I'm duping this there. That's now blocking Firefox 4.0 so something will finally be done to improve this for those few who are getting it.
Resolution: INCOMPLETE → DUPLICATE
