Here is a pure eye-candy idea that I had for Vista: what if we switched to a black navigation toolbar with a media-toolbox tabstrip when the user is in full screen mode. This is similar to how Apple uses HUD style controls when the user is immersed in full screen mode, and while there are no direct examples of this type of behavior on Vista, it feels in the spirit of the OS's visual style. Mockup attached.

Just tried with this code:
#nav-bar{
-moz-appearance: media-toolbox !important;
}
It doesn't look good at all because...
1. the location bar and search bar is white. Too much contrast here.
2. Vista's glass effect is still better.

Idea for styling full screen mode on Vista
While I like the idea of making the controls more minimal in a full screen mode, I don't think that going to black is the right way to do this; the transition to and from full screen would be a little jarring.

Using aero glass (to pick up the maximized look) would really be the right thing to do here.

Rob, we can't use -moz-win-glass behind the content area, right?

That was my understanding last time I tried. Vlad had an idea to do all painting on Vista w/an alpha channel which might fix it.

Setting to invalid since we will likely be revisiting full screen with a more significant UI change for Firefox.next, and this was a minor styling issue.

Unless there's a bug for that, this one seems generic enough to stay open.

Seems like this hasn't happened.
