This is a spun-off from bug 403147. See comment bug 403147 comment 59 and further:
Selecting an item inside a tree and move the focus to another element makes the selection background of the item nearly invisible. As Kai mentioned it can be solved by using -moz-appearance: treeitem. Currently it doesn't do anything.
Asking for blocking on of the next releases of Firefox.

This bug's priority relative to the set of other polish bugs is:
P2 - Polish issue that is in a secondary interface, occasionally encountered, and is easily identifiable.
Definitely only effects secondary interfaces, but is also very definitely easily identifiable.

I don't think so. We want to remove XUL and replace it with HTML+CSS.
All these XUL-related appearance values will be removed eventually.
(We've already unshipped them in bug 1496720).
