User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9) Gecko/2008052906 Firefox/3.0 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9) Gecko/2008052906 Firefox/3.0 After I close Firefox normally on Vista SP1, either Crash Reporter or Windows Problem Reports and Solutions pops up and either asks me to send crash data to Mozilla or sends info to Microsoft (respectively). It's one or the other, never both. Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: 1. Use Firefox 3 as one normally would (Facebook, Yahoo Mail, Gmail, etc.) 2. Close Firefox via either Alt+F4 or the red "X" close button in top-right 3. When the Crash Reporter window appears, send the error report by clicking "Quit Firefox" or "Restart Firefox" (both seem to get the same results) 4. You should see the picture of the window shown above. Actual Results: Error report NOT sent, does not appear in about:crashes Expected Results: Error report should be sent, report should appear in about:crashes Using standard theme Add-ons (dictionaries excluded): Facebook Toolbar 1.2.1 Google Toolbar 3.1.20080605W IE Tab 1.5.20080310 (have not updated yet) McAfee SiteAdvisor 26.6 Movie Media Player 1.0.0.07103010 Skype Extensions for Firefox 2.2.0.87 US Department of Homeland Insecurity Idiocy Level 0.1.2.4.44woot001 Woot Watcher 1.0.6 The bug is NOT replicated in Safe Mode. The bug DOES appear when Firefox is used in XP SP2 computability mode. Using only Windows Firewall and AVG Free 8.0 (AVG does not have a firewall)
Just to be clear when you say the bug doesn't happen in safe mode you mean to say that safe mode doesn't trigger the crash reporter, or that when safe mode crashes it submits the report?
Safe Modes does not cause the Crash Reporter to appear.
OK, I had another crash, and copied the following out of the Crash Reporter (before it failed to send the report, again): Add-ons: en-GB@dictionaries.addons.mozilla.org:1.19,en-CA@dictionaries.addons.mozilla.org:1.1.0,es-es@dictionaries.addons.mozilla.org:1.1,es-AR@dictionaries.addons.mozilla.org:1.0,en-AU@dictionaries.addons.mozilla.org:2.1.1,firefox@facebook.com:1.2.1,{3112ca9c-de6d-4884-a869-9855de68056c}:3.1.20080605W,{77b819fa-95ad-4f2c-ac7c-486b356188a9}:1.5.20080618,{CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0003-ABCDEFFEDCBA}:6.0.03,{CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0005-ABCDEFFEDCBA}:6.0.05,{1650a312-02bc-40ee-977e-83f158701739}:26.6,moveplayer@movenetworks.com:1.0.0.07103010,{B13721C7-F507-4982-B2E5-502A71474FED}:2.2.0.87,en-US@dictionaries.addons.mozilla.org:3.0.3,{33d38acc-1742-4583-b7c2-4122c1150b1f}:0.1.2.4.44wot001,{a92aadf8-193f-4a62-8740-5cce81775afc}:1.0.6,{972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd}:3.0 BuildID: 2008052906 CrashTime: 1214365008 Email: logan.bartholomew@ncf.edu InstallTime: 1213762374 ProductName: Firefox SecondsSinceLastCrash: 32871 StartupTime: 1214364498 Theme: classic/1.0 URL: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=9285016286&ref=nf#/profile.php?id=1398691373 UserID: 44da8e4e-bb2f-410b-84ce-d4a8e180a74d Vendor: Mozilla Version: 3.0
So the crash reporter is never able to send the crash report? Could you try a couple of times, perhaps? I've seen it often that the crash reporter wasn't able to send the crash report, but after a while, it still would succeed. Also, could you try disabling your extensions one by one, to see which one is causing the shutdown crash?
Severity: normal → critical
The Crash Reporter seems to be sending its reports faithfully now, and I am unsure as to the cause. I did update the IE Tabs extension to version 1.5; could this be the culprit?
Could you give some of the breakpad ID's? Just type about:crashes in the url bar of Firefox.
Are these they? 3ad677e6-4387-11dd-89a1-001a4bd43ed6 9c89ac30-4379-11dd-83af-001a4bd43ed6 c22e9b8c-4377-11dd-9628-0013211cbf8a I have a few more... these are related to a non-crash "crash" problem that I have with Vista SP1.
Yeah, thanks, that's what I meant: http://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/pending/3ad677e6-4387-11dd-89a1-001a4bd43ed6 http://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/9c89ac30-4379-11dd-83af-001a4bd43ed6 http://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/c22e9b8c-4377-11dd-9628-0013211cbf8a Unfortunately, the stack traces don't give a useful stack. I suggest you try and disable your extensions one by one to see which one is responsible for the crash.
Here's the other issue: Firefox doesn't "crash", per se. There is no system instability, I just close Firefox normally. Yet for some unknown reason, closing Firefox trips either Crash Reporter or Windows Problem Reports and Solutions reporter. For all I know, it could have just been my home network causing this problem. As of right now, Crash Reporter is performing admirably... I will advise if this situation changes.

(In reply to comment #9) > Here's the other issue: Firefox doesn't "crash", per se. There is no system > instability, I just close Firefox normally. Yet for some unknown reason, > closing Firefox trips either Crash Reporter or Windows Problem Reports and > Solutions reporter. Well, that should not happen. if the Crash Reporter comes up, something bad has happened. It doesn't really matter if it happened on closing. Lie I said, it's probably caused by one of your extensions.
Yes, we already troubleshooted the cause of the crash in support. Bug is for the crash reporter not working in an odd way.
With all extensions turned off (except dictionaries), Firefox does not trip Crash Reporter as far as I can tell. I will begin the process of testing each extension, and will report/comment when done.

After testing all extensions one-by-one, it is not any of them individually, as far as I can tell. There are only two scenarios I can think of that need testing: 1. Add-on interactions (like Facebook Toolbar + Google Toolbar) 2. Program interactions (I usually have AIM running while using my computer; I did not for my add-on testing) Here are ALL of my Crash Reports to date, for what it's worth: 4822adb3-43e8-11dd-9e2f-001a4bd43e5c 6/26/2008 9:27 PM 3ad677e6-4387-11dd-89a1-001a4bd43ed6 6/26/2008 9:53 AM 9c89ac30-4379-11dd-83af-001a4bd43ed6 6/26/2008 8:15 AM c22e9b8c-4377-11dd-9628-0013211cbf8a 6/26/2008 8:02 AM 5f0232d7-4376-11dd-acbe-001cc45a2ce4 6/26/2008 7:52 AM 9b0ba1a1-4331-11dd-8af2-001cc45a2c28 6/25/2008 11:40 PM 245c26c2-4331-11dd-ae29-001cc4e2bf68 6/25/2008 11:36 PM f923455c-4270-11dd-9b3b-0013211cbf8a 6/25/2008 12:41 AM d5bfb1ab-414d-11dd-815b-001cc45a2c28 6/23/2008 1:57 PM 935ccd51-3db5-11dd-a53a-001cc45a2c28 6/19/2008 12:09 AM

Three more Crash Reports for your reviewing pleasure... the problem for this bug seems to be solved... and I didn't really do anything. 59c822a8-44a7-11dd-b457-001a4bd43ef6 6/27/2008 8:15 PM d1dd7340-4471-11dd-9c03-001a4bd43ed6 6/27/2008 1:52 PM daf9b26e-440f-11dd-bb92-001321b13766 6/27/2008 2:10 AM
npCIDetect11 is google updater. the other one isn't recognized by my bugmail. the last three don't have useful stacks :(
I offer four more: e07f037d-470c-11dd-9a17-0013211cbf8a 6/30/2008 9:27 PM 4e208500-4650-11dd-abab-001a4bd43e5c 6/29/2008 10:56 PM 9f546d66-4604-11dd-92df-001a4bd43ed6 6/29/2008 1:55 PM c2bd5e6e-4591-11dd-880c-001a4bd43ef6 6/29/2008 12:13 AM Crash Reporter seems to be working just fine now... I am not sure why.
This is the only one of that bunch that gives a stack: http://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/e07f037d-470c-11dd-9a17-0013211cbf8a 0 @0x970ae8 1 xul.dll nsAttrName::Equals mozilla/content/base/src/nsAttrName.h:148
Well, it's been a week and I'm *still* getting the problem, but only intermittently (2 out of every 3 times I close the browser or so). New crash reports - they seem to be merrily sending now, but I'm not entirely sure why Crash Reporter keeps on popping up when I close Firefox: cd3a7a59-4d30-11dd-817c-001a4bd43ed6 7/8/2008 4:59 PM 620a276b-4d2b-11dd-a5c5-001a4bd43ef6 7/8/2008 4:20 PM 1dfb0007-4ca4-11dd-8546-001a4bd43ed6 7/8/2008 12:12 AM a591cc47-4be8-11dd-bbfb-0013211cbf8a 7/7/2008 1:50 AM 842a1ba1-4bd9-11dd-818f-001321b13766 7/7/2008 12:01 AM 26625af0-4bd2-11dd-8173-001cc4e2bf68 7/6/2008 11:09 PM 359abb07-4ba6-11dd-a501-001321b13766 7/6/2008 5:54 PM d66b323a-4b9d-11dd-a2de-001a4bd43ed6 7/6/2008 4:54 PM dbb61187-4b18-11dd-988f-0013211cbf8a 7/6/2008 1:02 AM a64edda1-4a4a-11dd-87ce-001cc45a2c28 7/5/2008 12:26 AM 1887c300-4a2a-11dd-b4bc-001a4bd43ef6 7/4/2008 8:33 PM e5807711-4a28-11dd-a7cb-0013211cbf8a 7/4/2008 8:25 PM dc80daae-48fb-11dd-bafa-001cc45a2c28 7/3/2008 8:30 AM b316cd26-4861-11dd-9aaf-001cc45a2c28 7/2/2008 2:07 PM 1ac0654f-4861-11dd-beee-0013211cbf8a 7/2/2008 2:02 PM 5b08e9e6-4854-11dd-b9b4-0013211cbf8a 7/2/2008 12:31 PM 8b3398cc-47f9-11dd-93f9-001a4bd43ed6 7/2/2008 1:41 AM 281fcf19-47df-11dd-b13b-001321b13766 7/1/2008 10:32 PM 729aee54-47de-11dd-a54f-001321b13766 7/1/2008 10:27 PM 9001858f-47be-11dd-ab24-001a4bd43e5c 7/1/2008 6:39 PM 475d3bc0-47be-11dd-8e49-001cc45a2c28 7/1/2008 6:37 PM Shall I call this bug closed?
The crash reporter server is currently very slow. I guess if this bug is about crash reporter not working always, then I guess you can close the bug, but I am more worried about the crashes itself.
I will continue to put up crash reports in bulk as I get chances to do so. The bug was about Crash Reporter not doing so hot, but it would seem to be sending these reports in earnest now, so the bug is closed.

Sorry to belabor the point but I've been working on http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox+crashes+when+you+exit+it and right now it just gives some generic blurb about checking extensions. It'd be really helpful if you could just clarify which extension you had to disable to make it stop crashing on exit.
Admittedly, it still happens sometimes. I've moved over to Google Chrome, so I'm not using Firefox nearly as much as I used to. For whatever good it might do, here are all of the bug reports generated since I last posted: 69e6e121-a0b0-11dd-93b7-001cc45a2ce4 10/22/2008 11:12 PM afb7e86b-a0af-11dd-aa69-001cc4e2bf68 10/22/2008 11:06 PM 72f5a95e-9c76-11dd-864b-001a4bd43ed6 10/17/2008 2:07 PM 5aaff923-9b94-11dd-bf74-0013211cbf8a 10/16/2008 11:08 AM 9972fe0f-9b92-11dd-adfc-001321b13766 10/16/2008 10:56 AM 063c692b-93ce-11dd-8704-0013211cbf8a 10/6/2008 1:41 PM e54e882e-935c-11dd-8b79-0013211cbf8a 10/6/2008 12:11 AM b1c7be45-924c-11dd-a584-001cc4e2bf68 10/4/2008 3:43 PM ad1758fa-8e5f-11dd-8fa7-001a4bd43e5c 9/29/2008 3:49 PM e950a9fd-8ab3-11dd-ac4e-0013211cbf8a 9/24/2008 11:42 PM eceecac5-8876-11dd-a09a-001cc4e2bf68 9/22/2008 3:20 AM d4ff635c-87d7-11dd-af79-001a4bd43ef6 9/21/2008 8:21 AM 612eb678-861d-11dd-9769-001cc45a2c28 9/19/2008 3:33 AM ca5829b5-861a-11dd-bff3-001321b13766 9/19/2008 3:14 AM 1e431d1c-8510-11dd-b3ab-001a4bd43ef6 9/17/2008 7:25 PM 61eb7d5e-83a1-11dd-9eb2-001cc45a2ce4 9/15/2008 11:40 PM f8d9f3cc-8330-11dd-a74f-001cc4e2bf68 9/15/2008 10:16 AM a494c8d4-82d1-11dd-ba5f-001cc45a2c28 9/14/2008 10:53 PM b3ed25c7-7fad-11dd-9fcd-001a4bd43ef6 9/10/2008 10:59 PM b76efdeb-7fa6-11dd-9dac-001a4bd43ed6 9/10/2008 10:09 PM 6250151c-7f9a-11dd-8317-001cc45a2c28 9/10/2008 8:41 PM 5b12b426-7f9a-11dd-8769-0013211cbf8a 9/10/2008 8:41 PM 51dccbb0-7f9a-11dd-8dae-001321b13766 9/10/2008 8:41 PM c4a98926-7f38-11dd-9546-001cc45a2ce4 9/10/2008 9:02 AM fc1be0ee-7ee7-11dd-991d-001cc45a2ce4 9/9/2008 11:24 PM 9f2eeeba-7e76-11dd-a185-001a4bd43e5c 9/9/2008 9:52 AM 55da4a07-7e75-11dd-abe3-001a4bd43ef6 9/9/2008 9:43 AM babd0fe1-7e6f-11dd-8c1f-001cc4e2bf68 9/9/2008 9:03 AM 869c977d-7dd8-11dd-b6f9-0013211cbf8a 9/8/2008 3:01 PM c314e62e-7d0e-11dd-9820-001cc45a2c28 9/7/2008 2:57 PM 3e65c875-7d04-11dd-99ae-001cc4e2bf68 9/7/2008 1:41 PM 5a5f3419-7cb2-11dd-9461-001cc45a2c28 9/7/2008 3:54 AM 13934782-7c52-11dd-aefd-001a4bd43ed6 9/6/2008 4:25 PM 6846e6a3-7896-11dd-9d99-0013211cbf8a 9/1/2008 10:25 PM 178de1c7-7854-11dd-ab71-001321b13766 9/1/2008 2:30 PM 7fc17e80-7845-11dd-b73e-001321b13766 9/1/2008 12:46 PM b9b037a6-77e3-11dd-bd7a-001cc45a2c28 9/1/2008 1:06 AM 07179e99-772f-11dd-bb58-0013211cbf8a 8/31/2008 3:32 AM 969c75c5-76fe-11dd-aea9-001321b13766 8/30/2008 9:46 PM f503b435-76a5-11dd-9a0c-001cc45a2c28 8/30/2008 11:11 AM edadc92b-76a2-11dd-8146-001cc45a2ce4 8/30/2008 10:50 AM abf6687a-75f3-11dd-a8ca-001a4bd43e5c 8/29/2008 1:55 PM 39aafd05-7336-11dd-bf08-001a4bd43e5c 8/26/2008 2:13 AM 7545f3a1-7302-11dd-af3e-001a4bd43ef6 8/25/2008 8:03 PM 84ebb7fa-72ea-11dd-96a8-001cc4e2bf68 8/25/2008 5:11 PM fe13a3b3-7232-11dd-9477-001a4bd43ed6 8/24/2008 7:18 PM ed9701ab-71f4-11dd-9862-001a4bd43ef6 8/24/2008 11:54 AM f5046211-704f-11dd-8fdb-0013211cbf8a 8/22/2008 9:40 AM 3c45a78f-704c-11dd-a8af-001321b13766 8/22/2008 9:14 AM
