From bug #23496:
"(and Mac, if Mac supports such a concept)
With Netscape 4.x, the installer sets Netscape as default when it is run, but
after that you can't really do anything to set Netscape back as the default if
another browser install (e.g. IE) maliciously steals the crown (*cough*). It'd
be cool if Mozilla allowed you to re-specify that it was default. Advanced users
can spend their time digging through the registry etc, but most of us would like
to click a button :)
cc:'ing Cathy, who is one of probably a number of users (including myself) who
would like to see this implemented in a visible way at some point. :)"

The Mac OS does in fact have the ability to have default applications for certain
file types, so, I'm filing a bug to implement this on Mac (per Ben's comment.)

Note that it's very important the installer not make this change without first
asking the user. I noticed a couple of times that my browser preference
had been changed without asking. We shouldn't make the same mistake
here.

Just as important: don't ask the user this on every launch. Let them decide to
use N6 while retaining IE as default, if that's what they really want. We
should only ask them once, unless they opt-in to being asked every time.

Don't think we'll get to this for beta1, marking nsbeta1-, reassigning to pchen

This bug is targeted at a Mac classic platform/OS, which is no longer supported
by mozilla.org. Please re-target it to another platform/OS if this bug applies
there as well or resolve this bug.
I will resolve this bug as WONTFIX in four weeks if no action has been taken.

In MacOS X 10.2.x and later, the default browser is set in the Safari preference
dialog. AFAIK, thats how it is supposed to be in the future. It would be nice,
though, to have this option in Mozilla, too.
But: different OS - different bug.
