User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.0.1) Gecko Galeon/2.0.6 (Debian 2.0.6-2) Build Identifier: 3.0a2pre: CVS trunk checkout as of 3 Sep 2008 In previous (released) version, when one leaves the quicksearch entry area blank, as soon as one leaves the entry area, it gets as greyed out text a description of the current quicksearch mode/option, e.g. "subject" or "entire message". That seems to be broken; it seems to work for some options (e.g. "Subject or From") but not for others (e.g. "Subject"). Also, it works for the default-at-startup (that is, the last selected option at last exit) option, as long as it is not changed. Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: 1. Start thunderbird/shredder 2. Select "Subject" quicksearch mode (if it is already selected, select something else, leave thunderbird and go to step 1) 3. Change mail folder; notice that quicksearch entry area stays blank 4. Select "Subject or From" quicksearch mode 5. change mail folder; notice that quicksearch entry area has a greyed out "Subject or From" Actual Results: quicksearch entry area stays blank in some cases Expected Results: quicksearch entry area, if blank and unfocused, gets the currently selected radio menu entry label as greyed out text

I can confirm this on Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.5; en-US; rv:1.9.1b1pre) Gecko/20080902031659 Shredder/3.0b1pre.

This seems at least partly related to bug #455248; see comment #2 there.
Depends on: 455248
It's a bit strange because there is no real regression range. The first build where I can see this issue is: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.5; en-US; rv:1.9.0.1pre) Gecko/2008062203 Thunderbird/3.0a2pre ID:2008062203 Using the quick search and selecting different criterias while going through messages in-between the empty text in not shown at any time. Sometimes the search box is empty and sometimes not. The build a day before is totally fine. Mark, any idea if one of this patches can be responsible for that behavior? Summary: quicksearch entry area does not always get greyed out description when blank → quicksearch entry area does not always get grey-text description (cue) when blank
combined gloda+quicksearch widget newly landed also does this

Note: the new quicksearch widget (that includes the "search everywhere" feature uses a much more modern toolkit widget (type="search"), rather than the homegrown/half-baked version we had before. Wayne, I'm not seeing this using the STRs in comment #0 on the mac. What STRs are you using, on what OS? And is it consistent, or occasional?
oops. I must autocorrect myself - if cursor is in the field then the <display when empty> text does not appear - which I guess is normal. i.e. 1. type 2. hit clear no hint 3. tab away from quick search hint appears
I think that's by design of that widget. I'm tempted to mark this FIXED by the switch to the real toolkit widget.
yeah, may as well close fixed by bug 474711
