Using 2000-07-19-10 commercial build on NT Classic skin has this purple sparkle background on some UI elements in the app (e.g. folder pane in mail, prefs dialog). I remember in 4.0 when we played with this idea, but we never shipped it, and I don't think I'd want to ship it now. Maybe someone disagrees and thinks this is just the coolest thing, but I'm filing the bug anyway :-)

yes, on a scale of one to this is the ugliest thing I've ever seen in my entire life, this ranks pretty high up there. I'll fix this but we should come up with a better background image. The one currently being used for the sidebars isn't much better (white with black horizontal stripes...ugh)

I find the marble texture classy and nice. I vote to keep it!
I like it as well. I think it goes well with the classic color scheme, and helps to accentuate the header panels in the sidebar, preferences, and elsewhere. If you can come up with a cooler image, all the better, but I don't think we should remove it altogether.

Oh, yes. Get rid of it. Please. In places where it seems needed, that's actually because the surrounding UI is poorly designed at the moment. * Sidebar tabs in Classic should look like tabs, which would mean there would be no trouble distinguishing between the sidebar tabs and the sidebar header itself, so the purple wouldn't be needed to highlight the sidebar header. * Preference panels shouldn't need headings, duplicating the highlighted selection in the category tree. If it's not visible enough, make it bold in the tree when it is selected.

Sending to Andrew, please get a reasonable image from German and pop it in.

Ok - will do.

Note that we could also use inactivecaption and inactivecaptiontext like the classic win sidebar header currently uses.
adding german to cc list.
I suggest using a simple plain #999999 background and white, bold type on it.
White??? Neither Mac OS nor Windows use white for UI text anywhere, except for window titles on Windows. And the purple stuff isn't used in window titles.
ok german suggested removing the image and setting the bg to either #999999 or #666666 and the fg color (text) to white.
Necessary for this to be there? Probably not. Pretty. Yes. Convince me this does any harm...
Inconsistent with any application bundled with the user's system --> doesn't look like an integral part of the user's system --> doesn't look like it's supposed to be the user's default program for Web browsing/e-mail/whatever --> won't be used by so many people as their default program for Web browsing/e-mail/whatever --> world domination by Mozilla is delayed. Plus, it looks like wizard vomit. Is that convincing enough? :-)
:-) Matthew, come on now, you're effectively saying all application must only ever element, I guess in this case, icons and patterns stamped approved by the OS. So if Claris emailer used a flat blue panel somewhere and AppleWorks used a flat red panel somewhere it'd be OK for us to use either because they've both been used by Apple once? That's taking things a little far, no? I think a little character is a nice thing. Hell, even a lot of character (New Modern) can be OK. Flat grey is dull corporate, boring. i.e. Windows 3.11 Best solution would be a better image... otherwise leave well alone. I need some colour in they grey to ward off feelings of suicide ;-)
> all application must only ever element, I guess in this case, icons and > patterns stamped approved by the OS That's exactly what I'm saying. Applications which display visual content (i.e. just about every app, except perhaps MP3 players and CD players) are means to visual ends, they are not ends in themselves. And as such, their interfaces should be as unobtrusive as possible, so the user can concentrate on what they're doing rather than on the interface for doing it. Giving toolbar icons color, for example, is useful because it helps the user distinguish between the toolbar buttons. But giving backgrounds a purple sparkly background serves no useful purpose at all. If I want my interface to be pretty for the sake of prettiness, or characterful for the sake of character, then I'll use a skin other than Classic. And neither Claris Emailer nor AppleWorks (AFAIK) are shipped as basic parts of Mac OS. Mozilla 4.x (in its Netscape incarnation) is, and one would hope that the next version will be too.
Priority: P3 → P2
What mpt describes is exactly the kind of users/usage the classic theme was designed for in addition to being a faithful copy of 4.x, hence any adornement is really a different/new skin.

Netscape 4.x uses a graduated background in the presfs headers (see attached screenshot), so this same background should be used in the Classic theme.

Summary: Should remove purple sparkle background in Classic skin → [CT] Should remove purple sparkle background in Classic skin
1) Netscape 4.x is not a benchmark for Classic (although it uses most of its graphics). 2) The 4.x graphic did not scale with different system colours.
One of the reasons I didn't used 4.x was that the interface wasn't as good as it should be. (Mozilla is better but still not very good:-( BTW, when will there be an OS X (Aqua) Interface?
