I am using thunderbird 3.0.5pre and finds that this bug still exist. I think the cause of the bug was different implementation was used to extract the subject from the message.
Not working example, "HTC HD mini 新機體驗會" was shown correctly in the message panel and its own window, but not in the listview, its own tab, and smart search result ("HTC HD mini ?s??????|")
Subject: HTC HD mini 新機體驗會
Content-Type: text/html;charset=big5
Working example (display correctly in all aspect):
Subject: =?big5?B?oWm3c7tEs3S7vKFqtdir/LlHpEilwbn0pMmtyL5BsW+o5KTP?=
Content-Type: multipart/alternative;
boundary="----=_NextPart_000_A4347_01CACBFA.BDD97C90"
Subject: =?UTF-8?B?Ijgw5b6M5Ym15qWt6LuN5ZyYIiBzZW50IA==?=
=?UTF-8?B?eW91IGEgbWVzc2FnZSBv?=
=?UTF-8?B?biBGYWNlYm9vay4uLg==?=
Content-Type: multipart/alternative;
boundary="b1_3a938f9321530758439373b8a9c01541"
Subject: =?GB2312?Q?=D7=BF=D4=BD=D1=C7=C2=ED=D1=B7=A3=BA=B6=A9=B5=A5(#C01-413?=

Haven't lately seen this (now running 3.1.9, Fedora 14). However I also don't have those old mailinglist-messages at hand anymore to retest directly against them.
