Using july21 commercial build
POP mail:
After filtering a/some new messages with a filter action of Mark Read, then
doing a Mark All Read on the folder those newly filtered messages will still
display as new. Any messages which were new but not subject to the filter will
have their NEWness cleared upon Mark All Read.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Launch a POP mail profile to mail window, login to the POP account.
2. Edit|Message Filters. Set up a simple filter for the POP mail account with
an Action of Mark Read. Confirm OK from filters ui.
3. Send yourself one message which doesn't match the filter criteria and one
message that does match the filter criteria.
4. Get messages. Don't select/read either of the messages. Note both messages
are New, filtered message is not bolded (boldness taken away from filter
action).
5. Message|Mark All Read. All messages except the filtered one are now
displayed READ -- only the filtered one is still displayed with NEW in the
status column.
Result: New status is not cleared until either next Get Messages or
exit/restart.
future per mail triage. Setting a filter to mark messages read isn't very
common and this problem eventually corrects itself.
Target Milestone: --- → Future
but one thing which could maybe be in the same area with this bug is when a
filter is generated to delete a msg then its unneccessary to mark this one as
unread in the trash.
or shall I report is as a seperate bug

This symptom appears to have been corrected by 1.4b. In build 0507, when I
select Inbox after the mail has arrived, the filtered (marked-as-read) message
does not have a green arrow on it, where as the unfiltered, unread one does.
Laurel, can you confirm this please?
Note that biff icon (component bar, and Windows tray) does clear as soon as the
Inbox is selected. If the view is already on the Inbox when the mail arrives,
the messages are not marked with green arrows at all -- bug

Sorry, left that 'bug' reference unfinished: see bug 192039.

An additional observation (tested with 1.4b-0527): If the new mail is marked as
read *and* moved to another folder, the dest. folder and the message are both
flagged with arrows; selecting the destination folder does not clear the arrows,
and Mark All Read does not either; but as soon as a different folder is viewed,
the arrows clear.

After further testing for bug 192039 (now reopened), I don't know what to think
about this bug. If a message is marked New but Read, it is still true that Mark
All Read does not clear the New flag for the message or folder. It's not clear
to me that it should.
However, viewing any other folder will clear the New flag from both the message
and the folder. It is not necessary to exit/restart.

Thanks to a fix for bug 227657, it should no longer be possible to have a
message which has been marked Read but still has the New flag. I am therefore
resolving this bug WFM.
However, note that for messages which are filtered with Move to Folder + Mark as
Read, the destination folder is flagged as New (green arrow). This is
inconsistent with messages that are only Marked as Read -- the Inbox doesn't get
a New flag in that case. Mark All Read on the folder will not clear that flag.
