With lots of email, and large attachments, people need to manage the space (both message counts and disk space) used by various folders in an account.
I suggest that we provide a "space management" Tab, likely off of the account central page, with tools to let people manage this.
Ideas that we can consider include:
- table view, which lets people identify largest folders (for both message count and disk space)
- pie charts or treemaps to make visual the relative sizes of folders
- specialized functions to help people solve specific tasks: simple ways to find messages with the largest attachments, histograms of volume per month, etc.
Having this functionality in a separate tab makes sense to me because managing space is something that people ideally do occasionally -- by giving it a lot of real estate, we can enable charting and table views which would be impossible to squeeze in the "primary" UI.

This is a good idea but is it something that would be better done through an addon?

Nope, because this is replacing having folders sizes next to the folder names in the folder panes.

I should hope it's not! ;-) I got the impression that this is an entirely *separate* suggestion to that of replacing the ability to optionally display folder sizes and message counts in the folder pane.
Personally I think that the ability to optionally display folder disk usage, unread message count, and read message count (as per bug 465564) are core functions that really should be included in the core product.
Although it's certainly true that not every user will use these folder pane features (which is why I think they should be optional, as they were in 2.x) I believe that they play an important role for many people. This is particularly true in appealing to users of some other mail clients. For example, I have a number of SOHO tech support customers who are moving to TB from The Bat and quickly ask to be able to see unread and read message counts in the folder pane.
I note that David Ascher has marked bug 465564 as blocking for Thunderbird 3 and I agree with this. This seems to me to position this bug (465568) as an added extra, not a replacement.

It's not a separate suggestion, those are gone - bug 464973.

The expanded columns are currently gone but bug 465564 is a separate suggestion (i.e. separate to this one) to bring them back. Bug 465564 has been marked as blocking for TB3 by David Ascher.

lack of folder size information has been a common complaint in various fora (including gsfn). And although this is mitigated by the folder pane extension and mentioned in the release notes, no doubt we will see an uptick in feedback about this when 3.0 goes to automatic update.
Is it possible to push this into 3.1? Blocking doesn't quite seem correct, and yet the idea of this missing 3.1 also seems bad. My recollection is davida or someone had done work/a mockup that's not reflected here in the bug not yet commented here. Is there something usable that can be landed with not much work? Or is the plan to introduce this via extension?
