I can't reproduce this on OS X 10.4.11 or 10.5.5.

I tested with today's trunk (aka FF 3.2), 1.9.1-branch (aka FF 3.1)
and 1.9.0-branch (aka FF 3.0.X) nightlies.

Some kind of font issue?

No, not a font issue. I have included images of the exact same page
displayed with Safari and with Shiretoko (firefox) and Safari displays correctly.

Latest build and mistakes are obvious
Here is same page displayed with Safari (same machine is used) and everything is OK.
I don't see this on 10.4.11. I'm fairly sure this *is* a font issue, Safari is simply not matching the same font we are.

Use FontBook and see if you can find the problem font.

Edit > Special Characters

Choose "Code Tables" from the view popup and find the code value for the entities in question. FontBook will list the fonts on your system that contain glyphs for that codepoint. My guess is you'll be able to spot the font with the funky glyphs. At that point you should be able to set up a more reproducible testcase and we can figure out if it's a FF bug or a font bug.

Yes, the problem is the STIX beta fonts (needed for mathml) are screwed up.

The bug still needs to be fixed. There have been discussions that perhaps the STIX fonts should be included (or suggested to be included) on all new releases of FF. The final version of the STIX fonts has not been released yet, but will be soon. If the problem is with the STIX fonts then someone from FF developers should contact the STIX font people and inform them of the error in their font.
Here is the image with STIX fonts disabled (now &lang (left-pointing angle bracket) and &rang (right-pointing angle bracket) fail).
The STIX fonts are still in beta, not sure what the latest status is. I thought the fonts were going to ship last summer but apparently that hasn't happened. During the beta period we did send a number of comments to them, we're keenly aware of the lack of fonts for use with MathML.

We should probably set up a test case that explicitly specifies the use of the STIX fonts, then test in both Safari and FF.

On my 10.4 system, there are no fonts that have glyphs for the &lang and &rang entities.

On thing to point out is that 3.1 allows you to use downloadable fonts via @font-face rules, so I think you should be able to come up with a solution that renders consistently across platforms.
Same issue as bug 431559. See bug 431559 comment 4 and 5.

Thank you! This bug should be marked as duplicate then.

Could someone look at <a https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=460023>Bug 460023</a> - incomplete glyphs in mathml torture test page

and see if that issue is a STIX font issue or not.
