Tested on build 20000728(29)08 M18. On 2000072108 in was not perfect, but acceptible and known issue, but from (for me) 2000072808 it is awful...
ezh@infonet.ee (Eugene Savitsky) browser scrolling? tree scrolling (mailnews threadpane / bookmarks, etc) Could you test this with a current M18 build and maybe give us a testcase or some performance numbers.
In browser. Try the given link - it's awful on my Athlon 600, 256Mb...
I don't see a problem on 080204 Win98. Not a processor problem, because i've got a PII 400 MHz with 128 MB. As Asa said, try on a current build. May have been low memory on your computer at the time.
Build 2000080208 on WinME. Scrolling at http://f1live.com/setup-demo/office.en.html is very slow. PS Just noticed - slow with PgUp/PgDn and wheel mouse (where is set to scroll 3 lines at once)... So sounds like some repaint problem?
Summary: Scrolling is very slow and uses up to 92% of CPU → Scrolling is very slow
The page scrolls fine - but it does freeze for a second or two immediately after opening it. Is this what you are reporting?
There is no scrolling slowdown at all on this page for me. tested with mozilla m18 080408 build on NT4
When I reported this bug I had ATI Rage Pro card, now I installed a TNT1 16Mb card and all is fine now... I'll try to reinstall this ATI on monday and then I'll say smth.
So, now I can confirm very slow PgUp/PgDn scrolling on 2 machimes with 1 with ATI Rage Pro, 2 with ATI Mach64 (but on all computers are 2560 driver for Rage Pro)... Can anyone confirm it? PS WinMe and Win98 SE RUS.
Summary: Scrolling is very slow → Scrolling is very slow with ATI video card
Silly question: do you have the correct drivers installed for the ATI cards? How does scrolling speed compare with, say, 4.x?
To: Simon Fraser Currently on my home machine I have ATI Rage Pro 8Mb AGP card with ver.2560 drivers from ATI (using WinME). Scrolling everywhere is normal, but on some pages Mozilla redraws the scrolled page so slow (with tables?)... I'll continue testing and figuring our pages on which this occurs. I'll try latest M17 build and M18. PS Which software can make a video you can see what's going on? PPS Installing Riva TNT or TNT2 resolves this problem.
Can confirm with 2000080708 m17. I'll test m18 tomorrow - wanna sleep...
It's strange, but I see it on my machine (Linux, XFree86 3.3.6, ATI Rage PRO) too I noticed slowdown when scrolling in trees with arrow keys. With older S3 graphic card it was faster I'll try X 4.0.

On 2000081504 winNT (ATI video card) the scrolling is OK on given URLs but it is slow on this one: http://www.canoe.qc.ca/TempoTele/aout14_crtc_CP.html
Yep, that URL also scrolls slow for me. Like page is splitted for ~3 parts, first repaints first pard, then second, etc. To cgohier@yahoo.com: what card exactly do you have?
I have an ATI RAGE XP AGP 2X
Sorry for the spam, make that an ATI RAGE XL AGP 2X
Try going to: http://phpbuilder.com/ I am using a Matrox Millenium II with 4 meg ram (PCI card) with a PII 266 processor. Try scrolling up and down continuously. It is so choppy for me, it is hardly worth viewing the site in Mozilla at all. It is Far better in IE5.01 sp1, however, admittedly, it is still slightly choppy moving the scrollbar up and down continuously, but nowhere near as bad as Mozilla is right now. Done with build: 2000091212 Jake
http://www.trast.ru/rus/an.asp?FOREX/25_09_2000 Try this url... On TNT2 it is AWFUL SLOW... And there are tables... Yesterday I also scrolled http://f1live.com/setup-demo/qualifying.en.html it is practically unusable when I must scroll up/down the page many times... It take 1-2 sec to PgDn/PgUp this page... Can someone repro it?
I just noticed: I changed resolution from 1280*1024*32 to 800*600*32 and back to 1280*1024*32 and it works much quiker now. I'll try to restart Mozilla now and reload all those pages.
Changing to all platforms, since I use now w2000.
OS: Windows ME → All
Summary: Scrolling is very slow with ATI video card → Scrolling is very slow
Hmmm. very intresting. Afret I restarted Mozilla all scrolls normal (with refrows, but like Mozilla does always).
Mozilla scrolls is very on pages with tables. But when I change the resolution it scrolls normal, with reflows, but does not take a second to PgUp or PgDn. Try: http://www.beesting.ee/cruzsurf.htm http://www.beesting.ee/komponendid.htm#Uued%20komponendid
Does anybody see this also?
I'm not sure if this is related to tables at all. If you take a look at all of the mentioned sites, you will see that all of them have a background picture specified in their body. In my experience, this slows Mozilla down quite much. I'll try to make a testcase.
There. I can barely scroll this page on my 550 Celeron. In NS4, it's no problem after the initial loading. This might get fixed by Imagelib 2, but I'm not sure
Downloaded K-Meleon 0.4. Noticed a huge scrolling speed difference between Mozilla and K-Meleon. And the winner is not Mozilla... Load the page http://rus.delfi.ee in both browsers and try to scroll it down/up with PgDn/PgUp. In Mozilla I see small reflows, but not in K-Meleon (I don't saw the reflows in Moz untill I used K-Meleon and it is very niticeble). I'm on Duron 1000Mhz with Nvidia MX video. Can anyone confirm? Any thoughts?
On a similar configuration (Tbird 1000, Geforce2MX), I can't notice any difference in scrolling between today's build and Kmeleon 0.4.

if this still a problem? I don't see any problem with linux 2001091909 with none of the following pages http://f1live.com/setup-demo/office.en.html, http://rus.delfi.ee/, http://f1live.com/setup-demo/office.en.html I have a P3-500 with TNT2-M64 card (no speed monster;), but of course linux drivers
using build 2001092103 on win2k (SP2) with a PII 266 and 4 meg Matrox Millenium card, the differences in scrolling between IE5.5 (SP2) and Mozilla are small. IE5.5 still comes in slightly ahead (percieved scroll speed), but it is not overly significant. I tested a large number of url's mentioned in this bug including the testcase. Looks like Mozilla has made some big gains in scroll speed! I'm not sure how relevant this bug is anymore? Yes, Mozilla could get better, but I think with general optimization, that will come anyway. just my $0.02 jake
See also bug 111681, which may be a duplicate. In that bug, I report on slow page down and slow scrolling on a web page, using an ATI graphics card. The web page is http://www.splendorofflorence.com/LearningCenter/philadelphia.htm
Most of the pages referenced on this page do not exist anymore or work fine on Linux 2001122008. The site http://www.splendorofflorence.com/LearningCenter/philadelphia.htm is incredibly slow, though (K6-2 500, 512MB, Matrox G200 8MB).
I tried all off the working links reported on this page and all work fine for me except: http://www.splendorofflorence.com/LearningCenter/philadelphia.htm I'm using Mozilla 2002020208 on Windows XP Pro.
Tried out http://www.beesting.ee/komponendid.htm#Uued%20komponendid I still see the slow scrolling (there seen reflows). Duron 800, 512mb, GeForce2 MX, Win XP, MS IntelliMouse Explorer, moz 2002022808. Slow on PgUp/PgDn and wheel scrolling. But with wheel it reflows only when scroll it up.
Strange... Tried out on my second PC and it worked fine. Duron 830, 256Mb, GeForce2 Ti, Win XP, Logitech Wheel Mouse. But moz 2002022603. Same drivers installed, but the first is on VIA KT133, the second is on KT133A, the first has SB Live! 5.1, second integrated sound. Will try on the second with 2002022808 build.
Very strange... On my second PC all looks fine. I tried to unload all drivers, but...
Ok. I've got it. 1. You must set the resolution to 1600x1200. 2. Open the link 3. When you scroll down all is OK, but if you scroll up till the beginning of the page (there are pictures!) and then the slowness (reflows begins). 4. They are also at 1280x1024, but the are almost invisible. Tested with moz 2002022808.
Check out http://www.ntcompatible.com. Scroll performance is unacceptable (Mozilla 1.0 RC1)!!! (WinXP, ATI Rage, 16bit color) I think it's a MAJOR bug 'cause it lasts so long and affects user experience directly.
tested all pages that should be slow, but they are all okay on my PC ( 900mhz Tb, Geforce 256 ddr, 512mb ram, win xp, build ID: 2002041711), but the following page is horrible slow: http://www.neowin.net/?&theme=blue
Checked all the pages mentioned in the posts above with Mozilla 0.9.9. Everythig was OK with 0.9.9!
When did this regress, exactly? Anyone narrow it down to a nightly? /be
Keywords: mozilla1.0+
Sorry for not being accurate enough but this regression appeared first very quickly after official 0.9.9 (a couple of days later). Some fixes have been made but still it's not as good as in 0.9.9. Q: Why the target milestone == FUTURE and not 1.0?
Build 20020421, Mandrake 8.2, NVidia drivers, Gnome-Sawfish, 1024x786x32 bpp. Scrolling works perfectly, even on http://www.neowin.net/?&theme=blue. MS Windows only problem?
Some of the links mentioned comment #43 seem to be related to bug 135626.
I tried all working link I could find on this bug page and all seem to work just fine on Windows XP with build 2002050308. Excepte this one from comment: #33 - http://www.splendorofflorence.com/LearningCenter/philadelphia.htm
Here's another site that is still slow: http://australianit.news.com.au/articles/0,7204,4210595%5e15397%5e%5enbv% 5e,00.html Jake
Status update: This page WFM on 2002050504 win32 on win2kpro.
Here's another site that seems pretty slow when scrolling. In fact, the whole GUI seems to be slow when the page is loaded. http://www.iping.com/ Jake
Mozilla 20020510, Windows XP Pro, GeForce2 64MB Ti - all pages mentioned above scroll ok except www.ntcompatible.com
This one is related to bug 143046.
Depends on: slowGIF
I will take this.. may be the gif issue.. and I might have a fix for this in bug 141786.

www.ntcompatible.com - performance still unacceptable with Mozilla 1.0 and build 20020607 (winXP, Celeron 1Ghz, GeForce2Ti 64MB)
Think fixing bug 141786 helped a lot - testing with trunk 2002061408 is fine. Still any complaints?
Scrolling for example on http://www.sausagetools.com/professional/ is still causing cpu hog and is very choppy. (trunk build 2002061712 on win-xp,1.1ghz,512ram).
Re: #48, the page at http://www.splendorofflorence.com/LearningCenter/philadelphia.htm is still very slow on my system (Windows 2000, build id 2002 05 30, ATI RAGE MOBILITY-M PCI w/ 4M). However, I notice when pulling up View -> Page Info that the last two images listed are 16,147 (!) pixels high. I don't know how this would interact with Mozilla's reflow logic but those sizes really stick out like a sore thumb.
In bug 150272, scrolling is slow.
