On behalf of Mozilla Russia team, I'd like to ask to approve following changes in list of search plugins to be shipped by Firefox 3.1 in Russian.
Replace rambler.ru with gogo.ru
Rambler market share in Russia is 6-7% and have strong tendency to fall (according to http://www.liveinternet.ru/stat/ru/searches.html?slice=ru;id=9;date=2009-01-01;period=month Rambler market share dropped from 15% in Jan 2008 to 6% in Jan 2009, according to http://gs.spylog.ru/global-statistic-search-engines/ Rambler market share dropped from 9.4% in Aug 2008 to 7% in Dec 2008).
These stats clearly indicate that users are unsatisfied with Rambler search engine and migrate to another search engines. Future of Rambler search engine is uncertain (Rambler earlier considered to sell its advertising network to Google (see http://www.google.com/intl/en/press/pressrel/20080718_begun.html) and switch to Google search engine).
I've made some research and propose to replace Rambler search engine with Gogo.ru search engine. According to search engine analyze web service ( http://www.analyzethis.ru/?&lang=en ), GoGo has better positions in subject search and quotation search, have better filters for ambigious words and porn search etc. Also GoGo provides suggestions for correct spelling in case of typos and search suggestions (like Google and Yandex) (both of these features are unavailable in Rambler).

As this bug is about replacing rambler.ru with mail.ru, reopening it per Bug 419213 comment 34:
-------------------------------------------------------
Vladislav Shabanov 2010-01-30 08:57:56 PST
Alexander, can you, please, reopen this topic?
In last new months landscape of Russian web has been changed, now Mail.ru uses
its own search engine (former named gogo.ru) and Google as an advertising
system. May be you know that in past we use Yandex technolory for both search
and ads.
As you can see in liveinternet,ru
or other statistics, our search engine has big market share, approx 10% of all
Russian queries processed by our engine:
http://www.liveinternet.ru/stat/ru/searches.html?period=month&slice=ru&id=5&id=9&show=%D0%BF%D0%B5%D1%80%D0%B5%D1%81%D1%82%D1%80%D0%BE%D0%B8%D1%82%D1%8C+%D0%B3%D1%80%D0%B0%D1%84%D0%B8%D0%BA&per_page=20&report=searches.html%3Fslice%3Dru%3Bperiod%3Dmonth
Now Rambler has only 3% share of market, but mail.ru has approx 10%.
So I asking Mozilla team to switch Rambler search provider in Russian build to
Mail.ru.
-------------------------------------------------------
AFAIK, Vladislav Shabanov is head of search department in Mail.ru
Mail.ru search site is http://go.mail.ru/
Opensearch plugin is http://go.mail.ru/opensearch.xml
Vladislav, can you confirm this information?

Replace Rambler with Mail.ru v.1
Technically speaking, this looks good, r=me. Thanks for the patch and sorry for the wait.
The change from rambler.ru to mail.ru looks like a good one for our Russian users. Mail.ru is a popular service (it ranks second in Alexa's list of most visited websites in Russia), while rumbler.ru has seen a steady decline in visits over the past months (if not years?).
Unghost, can you land this on 1.9.3 (l10n-central), mentioning this bug and my review in the commit message?
Thanks!

On second thought, I think it would be good to make this change on 1.9.2 as well.
Pike, do we need anything else than the patch from this bug? Any changes required to removed-filed.in to remove rambler.xml?

If we don't ship rambler in any other build, we should add it to removed-files.in.
Probably should be a separate bug in Firefox Build config, blocked on this one.
And we should coordinate the landing. I'd say to not try to do this for 3.6.4 aka Lorentz, just because scary and stuff. In order to be able to take lorentz fixes for .4, though, I'd hold off with landing on 1.9.2 until we shipped 3.6.4 for good. I'd also need to chat with LegNeato and folks that landing one would impact an "accelerated release" of .5.

Landed on trunk with http://hg.mozilla.org/l10n-central/ru/rev/fb76da47f634
I've filed Bug 560022 for removed-files.in issue.

Alexander, could you please clarify which release of FireFox will have Mail.Ru Search plugin instead of Rambler's one? Current official release 3.6.13 (russian localization), which is distributed from mozilla.org does not have this plugin.
Thanks!

Alexander, thanks for that!
And also I would like to make a small suggestion about Mail.Ru search plugin title and branding. Now it is "Поиск@Mail.Ru", but a better and more clear title would be "Mail.Ru: поиск в Интернете".
Can this suggestion be considered in further builds?
