When I attempt to use a shared profile on a network drive I run into a number of problems:
- the profile manager doesn't use the existing profile I point to. Instead, it wants to create new accounts when Thunderbird starts. I can adjust the Mail account settings to point to the correct e-mail accounts and local folders but
- If I exit Thunderbird and restart with a different shared profile, I get the same thing. I need to re-enter all the account information then point to correct mail folders for this second account, and
- when I go back to the first profile, the profile manager has again lost the settings, however
- I can start and stop Thunderbird and even restart the computer and it keeps the profile settings. It's just when I switch profiles that I lose the settings.
- I'm working around it by just sharing the e-mail folders but this doesn't prevent simultaneous access to the same folders - which causes problems.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Create a profile on a shared drive
2. Create a second profile on a shared
3. switch between them
Actual Results:
Profiles keep losing settings
Expected Results:
Profiles should keep settings
The workaround I'm using has non-trivial problems. This needs to be fixed.

How is this network drive mounted? SMB? NFS?
Sorry for the delay. I've upgraded it to Lenny and the bug remains.
The shares are mounted with Samba. The workstations are running XP/Pro SP3. The server is the PDC. The profiles are stored on a share with "staff" having rwx privileges. The user accounts use roaming profiles. "Domain users" maps to Linux group "staff".
Using the profile manager, I've set the Thunderbird profiles directory to point to a shared folder where all the profiles are stored. Whenever I change users, I have to reset the profile. It loses all the information about the user.
Right now I'm restricted to simply sharing the e-mail directories. I have a cron job synchronizing the address books to the roaming profiles overnight so each one gets the latest - not ideal.

This bug is filed in a bugzilla component related to pre-Firefox code which no longer exists. I believe it is no longer relevant and I am therefore closing it INCOMPLETE.
If you believe that this bug is still valid and needs to be fixed, please reopen it and move it to the Toolkit:Startup and Profile System product/component.
