I changed my LDAP password. Lighthing didn't "notice", and didn't tell me. I found out because the LDAP admin was able to dig into the logs and notice the Lightning UA.
1) we should detect password failures and use the activity manager mechanisms to at least log the errors, and ideally bring up a prompt (poptart) _once_, and figure out what to do next (when to try again, for example)
2) lightning seems to check passwords _very_ often.
I'm not 100% sure who'se responsible for all of these, but I think I've dealt w/ all of my other password-checking-devices

Theoretically you should be getting a login dialog if the server responds that your password is wrong. I wonder why this isn't the case?

most likely a duplicate of bug 435854

I got the same problem with my CalDAV account. Our company's security policy forces the users to change their password every 3 months. Everytime I change my password, the CalDAV calendar simply stops to work. No error message (even in Thunderbird's Error Console), no prompt for a new password.
Workaround: Open the Password Manager and delete all entries for https://your.caldav.server This causes Lightning to ask for a new password and the CalDAV account starts to work fine again.
