User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.0.6) Gecko/2009020409 Iceweasel/3.0.6 (Debian-3.0.6-1)
Build Identifier: Thunderbird/2.0.0.19
With the increasing use of mobile devices and multiple different MUA's on different platforms, the interoperability is becomes very important, even if you only imap systems, there are still issues, like how do we move and synchronize all the mailfilters that makes managing of email possible.
We have the: Sieve: A Mail Filtering Language
http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc3028.txt
And the internal:
$HOME/.mozilla-thunderbird/ct5d9pmu.default/ImapMail/secure.powercraft.nl/msgFilterRules.dat
I would like to see an open standard for the storage, import and export of mail filter settings. So all mail filters are guaranteed to work on mua's like GNOME evolutions, Claws Mail, Mozilla Thunderdbird, and all other MUA's.
This would make it better possible to use free/libre open source desktop applications for enterprise collaboration solutions.
Reproducible: Always

Reading the two bug reports you provided, I think I am revering to something new and more involving.
I am really revering to a new standard that can be implemented by all MUA's on desktops, mobile devices, websites etcetera.
The bug 78858 show a more Mozilla Thunderbird solution that can not be real time syncronisched with other MUA's.
We can discuses this more and decide later if this a duplicated or a new one.
Thanks,
Jelle de Jong

I would like to give this some more information. I have been using the ManageSieve extension on IMAP and the Sieve plug-in in Thunderbird to have an standard for mail filtering. I think the (Manage)Sieve protocol is the way to go for now and I would like to see Thunderbird get a native feature to import and export mail filters in the sieve standard. With an additional GPL compatible addon we can add the ManageSieve feature to Thunderbird so it can sync with a the servers mail filtering systems.

Isn't sieve the de facto standard for this? It's standardized by RFC 5228 (+) and all... Anyway, a bug report is hardly the place the create such a standard, so this is either wontfix or dupe of bug 79525.

According to comment #4, comment #5 and comment #6 I close this as dupe.
Please Jelle, feel free to reopen it if I'm wrong.
