Firefox appears to have not been tested in an Open Directory environment on Mac OS X 10.411 Client/Server. The new version breaks compatibility and the browser will not function at all. Browser functionality is perfect in local admin account, but not any standard user Open Directory Account.
Systems are as follows:
Mac OS X 10.411 PowerPC and Intel machines. Apple Security Update 2009-002 installed, newest Quicktime, Safari, Java updates installed. User is logged in to a Mac OS X Server 10.411 domain environment using non-administrator open directory login. User's login directory is stored on the server (this is called a roaming login).
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Login to Open Directory (10.4 Open Directory) with non-administrator login.
2. Launch Firefox 3.011 from the dock
3. Program behaves as said in details box
Actual Results:
I am not a programmer, but I assume the newest version needs some sort of local administrator (NetInfo) rights to function properly.
The program will exhibit the following behaviors: not show any of the user's bookmarks in the menu, will not respond to entering in a web page url, will not load the default webpage.
temporary solution it to revert to Firefox 3.010 or use alternative browser.
Expected Results:
Allowed me to surf webpages and access bookmarks with non-administrator OSX 10.4 Open Directory login.
Please check the source code to see if the program accidentally now requires local administrator rights. It is also possible that it was complied incorrectly so that FireFox is not looking at the current user's logged in firefox preferences folder, but one of the local login folders. Since the local login and the local drive is read only permission for a regular OD user, then it is possible that the program might accidentally have been complied to now require write permission to the local drive.
Please fix this issue as soon as you can. Open Directory is used in small cases of OSX users, but many schools and creative institutions rely on Open Directory to lock down Mac systems.
I have disabled Firefox and am now requiring users to use Safari 4.0 or Camino due to the security now outdated on the only version of Firefox that I can use (3.010).
