When you bookmark a site in IE it will look for favicon.ico in the root directory of a website. This icon is then used on the bookmark instead of the default IE icon. (there is also a method to link an icon to a particular page). I think it would be great if this was supported in Mozilla (Netscape 7) as it makes bookmarks much easier to read.
