When a feed is set to "show the article summary instead of loading the web page" this setting appears to only affect the preview panel (which I normally don't use). When you double-click an article to open it in a new window, it always loads the web page, regardless of the feed's setting on that preference. This makes it impossible to read a feed in Thunderbird from a password-protected site (which uses a feed key in the feed URL) because loading the web page just gives you the login screen (which then launches Firefox if you try to log in). In this case, the site in question syncicates the entire article content in the feed, so if it viewed the summary I could read it all.
OK, apparently this is a separate setting, which is only exposed in the Message menu, when you actually have an article selected. Not very discoverable :( If you select the feed folder from the folder pane, the option is not available. You have to actually select an article in the message pane first.
Since transition to TB3 I suffered from the same issue when someone kindly pointed out your bug report. IMHO it would be much better if this option was placed either in Options, Account Settings or the View menu.
this is solely a doc issue. the feed menuoption mirrors its non feed Open Message counterpart, whose location is both longstanding and well-known.

Thunderbird is aiming to be a user-friendly product these days. A non-discoverable option does not make a friendly product. This is a bug.

(In reply to comment #3) > the feed menuoption mirrors its non feed Open Message counterpart Which is illogical as it's fairly likely you wouldn't actually want the same behavior in both places. (I don't, for example)
(In reply to comment #3) > the feed menuoption mirrors its non feed Open Message counterpart Not really. They may sound similar but the effect is not mirrored. The Open Feed Message changes a setting, the Open Message options displays the message. This is a setting and it should be grouped with other settings in the feed properties or the account settings. OT: Is there anyway to have an RSS open in your browser instead of Thunderbird?
Bryan could you figure out something to solve this ?
Another issue with this seems to be that TB3 completely ignores the 'By default, show the article summary instead of loading the web page' setting for the news account or news feed. Instead, it always seems to default to summary.
A standalone non-RSS message window has the View | Message Body As menu. A standalone RSS item window does NOT have the View | Feed Message Body As menu. There are several other menu-specific bugs in the wake of the patch; see bug 438429 comment 81.
(In reply to comment #7) > Bryan could you figure out something to solve this ? Not likely to get much time for this for a while, sorry.
is bug 579533 a duplicate? and is this regression warranted?
It's a dupe of bug #579533: feel free to reopen it if I'm wrong
