the "mail views" toolbar item, used to filter for read/unread/attachments/tags/etc. disappeared after an upgrad efrom build 20090903 to build 20090914.
i witnessed this in *both* windows and linux shredder installations.

As you may or may not have noticed a number of other buttons also would have disappear from the toolbar as a result of bug 474523.
Whilst I agree that it is a pain that you lost the mailview option forcing a change to the set of defaults was the only sensible way of making the change in bug 474523 work.
You can easily add it back again (by right clicking on the toolbar and selecting customise).

i did not know that this happend by intention. thanks.
i think this bug can thus be resolved, or do you want to leave it open for others who might think that this is a "bug"? ;)

Let me dupe this against bug 515715 as this fits the kind of case which could be resolved interactively by some sort of migration UI.
Resolution: INVALID → DUPLICATE
