With some facets like people or folders, it's not obvious in all situations what clicking that facet will effect (cf. Bug 516170). Such facets would be much easier to use with tooltips. Some facets are more intuitive (like date picker), but they might also benefit from tooltips. Just a mental note, I know it's likely to happen for 3.0.

David A provided a workaround for most of this problem by implementing the "menu-on-click" choices for facets like people and folders. However:
The date picker is now hidden by default, and instead we show a big graph icon next to the search results headline. This icon has no visual cues that it's about date and will be absolutely meaningless for new users without a tooltip like "Show date picker" and "Hide date picker".
These tooltip strings should be added.

I think this can be closed as fixed by bug 1022228.
Further improvements to this view can happen in bug 929845.

I think comment 0 is more about faceting (and tooltips) on the left. I assume that's part of what you intend for bug 929845.
