Right now I'm using the TreeBoxObject and view in order to get their properties, but it'd be good to have a helper function going forward. This is a fairly old bug which has had little action on it. I'm wondering if this is scoped for a particular project. If it's not on anyone's radar I think it should be resolved WONTFIX for now and tracked on a feature requests wiki page.

No, this is definitely not wontfix. It's an important feature which needs to be implemented.
