The first frame of an animated GIF may be within the confines of browser.chrome.image_icons.max_size, yet the GIF may contain thousands of frames, summing up to hundreds of megapixels. It shouldn't be so expensive in terms of system resources to render a minuscule 16x16 icon. There's also Bug 305986 about caching thumbnail icons - it was fixed in SeaMonkey, but I'm not sure about Firefox. Reproducible: Always
An example of a small GIF with lots of frames (not really worst case scenario, though): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Phoenix%28Julia%29.gif http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/ed/Phoenix%28Julia%29.gif
