adding candice and me to the cc list.
this is a useful feature for debugging, too.
(could have used it for #57151)

this is a pretty old and important bug. Especially, since Mozilla cannot import
its own file format (backups, exchange between home and office, etc.).
Could someone please nominate a milestone or keyword (Niko, Chuang?)

1.0 this? or even 0.9?
IMO it's very important, too! but i'm not a coder, so I don't know how much work
this is.

... just forgot to mozilla1.0 it :-)
Target Milestone: --- → mozilla1.0
niko: do not change the milestone, it's for the assignee.

Adding nsdogfood nomination, especially for ldif format, since that seems to be
most used. See also bug 14096.

converting nomination to nscatfood, this doesn't appear to be an internal
blocker. If you disagree, please explain why.

This bug should be marked 4xp, as 4.x was able to export LDIF.
Didn't some earlier versions of Mozilla on Windows have features for exporting
the address book? If so, why was the feature dropped?

Should I file a separate RFE?
I think it is a very important capability to be able to drop an address book
entry into an email and get either-
a mailto: link
or
a complete vCard (more useful)
Is there any interest/ existing plans for this?
Comment 18•23 years ago
|
||
Both of those things do sound like they should be separate RFEs.

It's also invaluable for Palm sync. Very, very important!

for those for us reviewing "stable" builds (per Mozillazine recommendation), I
find myself in situation where I must completely un-install/remove profiles
because something becomes irreparably horked in Mail/News (ref #105634)
the fact I can't export for backup for interim until re-install make migration
of address book impossible. Thus, I can't use Mozilla on regular basis for
business day-to-day.
People attempting to contribute for bugs/feature analysis must be enabled to
"use" product. Otherwise, what's the point?

I'm afraid I must agree with garetta. This is far too important a feature. We
can manage (and export, and import) bookmarks. We were able to import and
export addresses in Netscape 4.x. Is this some kind of obscure "non compete"
omission so that the Netscape offering is more appealing?
No more bug submissions until I get this, gentlemen.

Okay, this has been acknowleged as a critically needed new feature for over a
year now; when will we be able to export our address book?
Or, alternatively, is there an external program available *anywhere* that we can
point at the mozilla address book file and get the contents out in some portable
format?

jhardin: I believe there is a program called Dawn that will read and write
various addrbook formats, including mozilla's. Search the archives of
n.p.m.mail-news on google to find more info.

Dan:
Well I found dawn but does it look for the adressbook file for itself or do I
have to know which Mozilla file contains the adressbook.
If so which does??!!
Comment 28•23 years ago
|
||
Croco: I haven't actually used Dawn myself, so I don't know for sure. But the
addressbooks are files in your profile directory with a .mab extension.
Comment 29•23 years ago
|

Used Dawn and it works perfectly you just tell him what kind of browser you have
and he exports it!!

Being able to export the address books is very important to me.

Marking nsbeta1 because moving address books from one profile to another, or one
machine to another should be easier.
