User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.0.15) Gecko/2009102815 Ubuntu/9.04 (jaunty) Firefox/3.0.15
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686 (x86_64); en-US; rv:1.9.1.5) Gecko/20091121 Thunderbird/3.0
When opening a mail in a new window instead of in a tab, the "other actions"/"show conversations"-button has no effect.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Right-click on a message in the message list and choose "Open in New Window"
2. Click the "other actions" button and choose "show in conversation"
Actual Results:
Nothing happens.
Expected Results:
The window is divided horizontally. The top part shows the conversation-thread as a list.
If the message is opened in a tab (default action), this function works as expected.

Confirmed on Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.1.5) Gecko/20091121 Lightning/1.0pre Thunderbird/3.0 (ID:20091121183158)
Additional note on expected results: I believe the expected results should be something more like "A new tab opens in the current window with message and preview panes, the message pane showing the conversation's thread."

Confirmed here too. Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; fr; rv:1.9.1.5) Gecko/20091121 Thunderbird/3.0 ID:20091121183158.
Re comment#1, I don't see why a new tab would be wanted. Displaying the message list pane in the existing tab would seem more logical to me.

It might, but the current behavior when opened in a tab or when viewed in the default always-open tab is to open a new tab with the behavior I described.
Therefore, that's what I would *expect*, though not perhaps what would be most *desirable* -- though in my case I would slightly prefer that Show in Conversation open a new tab.

standard8, can you transfer the wanted 3.1 to 3.3?
standard8 on irc "fixing this would probably depend on some of the tab stuff we're thinking about"

I rarely use standalone message window, but when I do, I find it particuarly egregious that open message in conversation is not available. Only open message in containing folder
is available
Summary: 'show in conversation' doesn't work when mail opened in standalone message window → 'show in conversation' is not available / doesn't work when mail opened in standalone message window
