this does not fit any descriptions of/solution to this problem reported.
i have used the beta verson of tb 3. the problem was there a long time ago. it came back suddenly after installation of rc2 (rc1 did not have this problem! neither did earlier beta's).

possibly of interest here: i use imap.

another, maybe related, problem is that junk now sometimes does not get flagged as 'read' while that option is on. my suspicion is that every time i receive junk, i get the new mail alert, just a hunch.

clicking on the taksbar icon does not do anything. the alert disappears when i click on any other folder.

it is more than just annoying not to have a mailclient accurately report when there is new mail, therefore i find this a major problem.

i get alerts for nothing.

Expected Results:  
nothing.

i use imap. bug did not exist in tb3 beta, up until rc2. it did exist in earlier versions of thunderbird.

Does this happens in -safe-mode (http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_mode) ?

Any errors in Tools -> Error console , when this happens ?

there are several errors about declarations. i have no idea what this means. are they related? 

more -perhaps related- weirdness: a certain message, just like any other message, just gets flagged as 'unread' over and over again for no reason. just that one only. dozens of times. restart, still happens.

i might have to go back to rc1, this version had none of these problems and worked fine for me.

do you still see this problem with version 3.1?
if you do, do you also filter messages to folders.

it is still there, only in a much less annoying form. what happens sometimes is that the account name gets bold and blue (ie new messages arrived in account) while there are no new messages.

i don't think the new mail alert in the tray goes off for no valid reason anymore, but i am not 100% sure of this.

and i do use filters. i have many filters. i don't know if this could be something, perhaps it has nothing to do with it, but i have made some filters in the past for certain mails that do set the 'read' flag.

if that's true, then do you agree this is the same as bug 496254?
(and you might also see bug 272125)

let's assume dup.  reopen if the probem doesn't go away when bug 496254 is fixed.
