This seems to be a support request; can you go to https://support.mozillamessaging.com/ to resolve it? If you can determine how Thunderbird got into this state, please reopen.

Unfortunately this is a common and serious problem, and we keep receiving questions from users on the Italian support forum. For what I understand, Microsoft decided to drop SIMPLE MAPI support in Windows 7. Even if Thunderbird is set as the default mail client, you can't send mails from some softwares (for example PDF Creator, but also several billing softwares, CRMs, etc.). Context menu (send to -> mail) and mailto links work as expected, but those software don't. Since I'm having this problem with some of my clients, I've tried all possible solutions without results. 1) Microsoft has a little software to check SIMPLE MAPI support (SIMPLE MAPI console application, Smplmapi.exe, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/171096). On Windows 7 it stops at point 1 (Logon to messaging system). 2) Tried replacing mapi32.dll and Msmapi32.ocx with versions taken from an XP machine. Now you can send messages, but the default client seems to be ignored (on the machine I tested it kept using Outlook instead of Thunderbird). I'm not sure if marking this bug as NEW is the right procedure, since it's true that Thunderbird has issues with Windows 7 MAPI, but it's not really Thunderbird's fault. Maybe the discussion should be moved to bug 128284?

making the dependencies on tb-enterprise because I think, enterprise will move to 7 and they'll need the possibility to send files directly from other pieces of software.
Blocks: tb-enterprise

Are all of you running versions of 7 in 64 bit mode ?

I've personally seen this only on 64bit machines, but we've received reports also from people using Windows 7 32bit.

BUMP - this is really a pretty critical problem. There are many apps that use simple mapi that must now be updated to enhanced. Further, any newly released programs will use enhanced mapi from the start - This PRECLUDES the use of Thunderbird to send mail from those apps. In the business world, this lays a heavy hand AGAINST Thunderbird as it is unlikely that two email apps will be supported by IT. I'm BEGGING for TB to support Enhance MAPI.... even if it is via addon!

Further info - KB980681 (listed by abittner) no longer works on Win7 post SP1. MS mail merge was updated to use enhanced MAPI - again, Thunderbird use locked out.

Some info which may be of use: I am using Thunderbird 3.1.11 on Windows 7 Pro and sending Simple MAPI messages with no problems. The same app trying to send on XP via Thunderbird 5.0 however gets a "Failure" message when sending, and choosing not to show the email dialog. (otherwise it sends fine) So, it looks to me like something has broken between Thunderbird v3.1.11 and v5...

I seem to be experiencing this problem as well. It may have been introduced in a newer version though, since I have a 3.1.11 Thunderbird installation on a Windows 7 PC which works fine, and a v5 Thunderbird installation on Xp which gives me a "Failure" message as soon as I opt not to show before sending. Software I am using can be downloaded from www.omniaccounts.co.za, if it helps. Both PC's are using the same Gmail account, and I only have one account set up on each. I am using IMAP.
