I open the attached email. The email, originally received by user1 now opens on my computer. I click the reply-button and answer te email. If the original email has images (embedded), I cannot send this email. I seem te have a problem with the image, TB cannot find the image at the path that is in the properties of the email. I suspect it still looks for the image at the path of the first PC user1) the original email was received on. It may be similar to Bug 539251, but I'm replying on an email, forwarded as embedded. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Send an email with embedded image 2.Forward as attachment 3 [review].open the attachment and reply Actual Results: The sending takes endlessy and ends in a error message

It may be similar to Bug 539251, but I'm replying on an email, forwarded as Attached (!) an not inline, Sorry for the error
What error message do you get ? Can you share such a message (save it in .eml format and use add an attachment link above) ? Do you have the issue if Thunderbird is started in -safe-mode ? Anything in Tools -> Error console ?
Pleas open this mail. Then open the attachment (the original mail opens) and press "reply" I can not send te replied mail, probably beacause the path of the image leads to the original mail
Error massage: The error message is a time-out. It pops up after trying to send the email, showing the dialoog box "linking attachment". Probably it can not find the original attachment (the embedded image). Saving the mail is a problem The replied mail can't be saved (no clear error massage)so I attach the forwarded mail. Open the mail, open the attachement and press reply, press "send" In safe mode, on different computers an in several versions: same problem. Error console: After opening the attachment of the forwarded message: Fout: msgHdr.folder is null Bronbestand: chrome://messenger/content/mailWindowOverlay.js Regel: 2701 I will put full message in attachment AFter pressing "Reply" Nothing After pressing "Send" (takes several minutes

I have attached 2 messages, Cannot_Send_Response.html & Can_Send_Response.html. These will be referenced as 1st & 2nd messages from here on. TB will not save or send the 1st message. TB will save & send the 2nd message. Looking at bug 547956 "Cannot send Reply on email with embedded image" this may be the same problem. The first message was a reply to a message I received from a TB user. The 2nd message was created by; - copying the content of the first message into a new compose window, - deleteing the image referenced on line 310 {in the 1st message} when composing the second message, - copying the image to the clipboard, - pasting it into ms paint, - and then copying it from ms paint to the 2nd message. Paths for the 2 images are different so maybe this would help in figuring this bug out. I also saved the second message as a .eml file and have included that in the attached archive. I could not save the first message as a .eml file. David Paul

Hi, I have the same problem for months : more or less each time someone sends me an email with an inline image, I can't reply to him without removing them from the previous message (selecting the non displayed images in reply window and hitting delete). "Inside" explanation in my opinion, 0- I send myself an email with an image, here Arfy200.jpg 1- in the sent message source from "Sent" directory, the image is inline ... --------------000805000100000306010501 Content-Type: image/jpeg; name="Arfy200.jpg" Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64 Content-ID: <part1.09050205.07010107@alcatel-lucent.com> Content-Disposition: inline; filename="Arfy200.jpg" ... 2- in the reply message source, it is "transformed" to ... mailbox:///D%7C/Documents%20and%20Settings/paborsch/Application%20Data/Thunderbird/Profiles/8yfgt7k0.default/Mail/Local%20Folders/Inbox?number=100678232&header=quotebody&part=1.1.2&filename=Arfy200.jpg (can't get source, as it is impossible to send or save the reply as Draft : this location is from the broken image properties) And as the file does not exist, it can't be joined to message or saved as Draft. What I noticed also is that there is a little flicker: - I hit reply - the reply window is created - for some miliseconds I see the original image well - then the "On DD/MM/YYYY hh:mm, FirstName Name wrote:" is "created" in the window - and the image becomes "broken"
Update : by removing "WiseStamp" plugin, all is well. With WiseStamp activated, I double click on the "bad" image and change the "%7C" to "|" in image path and image is back. Regards, Pascal
I have almost the same issue, the original email does not have to be forwarded as an attachment. For me it seems to be from one particular contact. If his email has inline images and I try to reply or forward, Thunderbird complains that it cannot attach the attachments and will not send the email or save a draft.
I've had a similar problem for a long time. It seems to happen whenever I reply to a message with inline images, as in Tim's comment above. When I press Send, Thunderbird shows an "attaching" message which stays on the screen for a long time before eventually failing. I realized a while ago that the problem only occurred with inline images. Now, whenever I see the "attaching" message and know it's from inline images (as opposed to a real attachment), I cancel the send, go back and delete all the inline images (usually company logos), then resend the note. When I do that, I no longer see "attaching, merely "connected to SMTP". The note is then sent normally. Needless to say, I'd rather not have to do that. I'm not aware of any settings or options that would work around this. Are there any?
I can confirm that. "Attaching..." message appears in an alert box and the forwarded or replied message is not sent when the cited message contain pictures inline. It causes problem only in some cases, I have no clue how to find the exact reason. The problem is quite annoying.
I've had a similar problem like Tim. It happen when I reply to a message with inline images from one particular contact. This error does not always occur but in certain situations that I can not reproduce. This error is not created if I write the message, with the same images online from another account.

Hi with MozillaThunderbird-31.7.0 and earlier versions I have the same issue. I think the time you need to reply a message plays a important role. If I answer just Ok or similar, the reply work as expected. With longer answers the contact to the image seems gone (I have an imap account) and I have to delete the image or copy the answer and paste it to a new reply to the same message. It does not matter how long the answer is as long as you just answer quick enough.
I have a similar issue with Seamonkey, or maybe it's the same thing. When someone forwards an email to me, if I double-click on the attached email, it opens in a new window that looks like I was just emailed the message the directly (although it has the other guy's email address in the "to:" field). I can see Reply, Reply All, and Forward buttons, but they don't do anything.
I have been having exactly the same problem for some time when replying to messages with inline embedded images. The only work around I have found is to delete the embedded images, which is not ideal.
Still not solved for 5 years!!! Dozens of similar Bug Reports and still no solution!!!!
(Needinfo looks like a mistake, so clearing)

Bump. This bug is still alive and well. A gnat buzzing around an otherwise excellent piece of software! :-)
It has been like this forever. The unability to properly process images has been built in thunderbird since the beginning, and despite several bug reports the developers have never had any intention to do something about it, they just pretend the problem doesn't exist. I just resort to scrolling through all my emails and deleting all the images from the signatures and everything, every time I reply or forward an email. Seriously, this is infuriating. Makes me want to use Outlook, if only it wasn't even more inept at handling basic stuff.
Bug still present in Thunderbird V38.7.0 I'm using POP server. The bug is becoming more and more annoying because an increasing number of my contacts are embedding images in their mail (mainly company logo's). Hey Mozilla peoples, take in account this bug instead of making not necessary and not requested improvements!
Possible work-around: the plugin "LookOut" By Aron Rubin seems to solve this problem.
I cannot confirm that LookOut solves the problem. IMO it has nothing to do with composing and sending messages, instead it performs transformation on certain MS-format incoming mails. I had been using LookOut for a long time until it recenntly started to regularly freeze my TB. So now this plugin is disabled but some months ago it was enabled and the image embedding problem was present.

Especially annoying if you wrote an application e-mail over a longer period of time an finally can't send it! Since i'm searching for a job und using a self-made template (with embedded images, like a portrait and example-work) it drives me nuts!
I select and copy the mail which I want to reply. Then I paste it without Formatting. After that I can send the e-mail.
I have always had this issue in Thunderbird when forwarding or replying to email with images. Thunderbird is stuck in a endless loop which times out. I solve the issue by deleting the embedded images from the mail and the it's possible to send the mail. Hope this will be solved.

It works for me.
(In reply to Veganberserker from comment #28) > Since the last Update 45.1.0 the Bug seems to be gone. > It works for me. I was wrong, it IS NOT SOLVED. Workaround: copying the images from the original message / template (right-click on source image > copy, then insert via right-click on the same image in the message to be sent) bevor sending. Could PLEASE someone investigate this bug?! It's REALLY anoying.
I could not reproduce in TB 45.1.1 using the steps in comment 6, at least the message sent. The embedded image though does not appear (nor did it in TB 38 where I can reproduce). I had hoped to test whether the proposed changes in bug 453196 would also solve the fail to send, but cannot do that test. Once we land that bug, if someone can reproduce it would be good to test to see if the behavior changed.
I have been imprecise. Bug 532395 is my real problem. The rest of what i wrote here holds true. With the addition of that TB sometimes sends a complete other embedded image from a completely different mail ... doesn't make it better, than not sending it.
I'm reasonably confident that we now understand the root cause of both of your issue (the hang and the false image), but they are separate issues that need to be handled separately. At the moment, I am only working on the hang. If you have any reproducible cases of hangs, other than what has already been discussed in bug 453196, I would appreciate being able to test them.
Confirm that I have had this same issue "forever". Somehow it seems to be related to the autosave feature of the Editor. If I am quick enough answering, so that Thunderbird does not get a chance to save my message to the drafts folder, I'm usually OK with the embedded images. If I take longer answering an email with embedded images, and Thunderbird autosaves my message to the drafts folder, then the editor hangs with the message "Attaching ..." when trying to send. Somebody should modify the bug title from "Cannot send Reply on email with embedded image, forwarded to me as attached email." into "Cannot send Reply on email with embedded image." because the problem exists irrelevant to attachments.
Been suffering from this for years. Figured out long ago that I just have to manually delete all signatures in email responses that have any image so that my message will send. Is there a fix? I'm on 45.2.0. Looks like it is targeted for fix in 50? I'm not a developer here, just a frustrated user who left Outlook behind 10 years ago because it couldn't handle inbox filtering rules well.
Please try Earlybird from https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/channel/ and report success or failure. If successful, then probably helped by what is described in bug 532395

Thanks Wayne. Please be patient as I prefer not to test on my productive PC and will not have access to another machine until after Xmas.
Thanks. Setting a reminder

hi, any fix coming for this? Using SeaMonkey, and every time i reply to an email containing an image, i get a script error, and then seamonkey freezes and i have to restart. Seems related to this thread. thx version 2.46
(In reply to johny why from comment #39) i receive a script error: " A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, open the script in the debugger, or let the script continue. Script: chrome://messenger/content/msgHdrViewOverlay.js:309 "

Two scenarios: 1: Reply to an e-Mail containing embedded images, leave the message editor open. Move the original message to another folder. Now try to send the message, Editor hangs with "Attaching ...". 2: Reply to an e-Mail containing embedded images, take sufficient time composing the message so that Thunderbird autosaves to the drafts folder. Try to send the message, Editor hangs with "Attaching ...".

For me, the problem is fixed after upgrading to Thunderbird 53.0. I've been waiting years for this. Additional to what has been said before, I encountered the following: - Creating a reply to a message containing images - I can see the images within the quote - Wait for Autosave to happen after a few minutes -> the images disappear, being replaces by the "file not found" image placeholder icon - when sending, the editor now hangs with "Attaching..." - Fix: Cancel sending, then remove all images from the quotes, send -> success

Good news at last. It seems the problem is FINALLY SOLVED in Thunderbird 52.1.0 I have not been able to reproduce the error after updating to Thunderbird 52.1.0 (I tried hard, though). BIG THANK YOU to all involved in solving this issue!
