The 'view/toolbars/menu bar' item is no longer in nightly builds for Linux, making it impossible to toggle the menu bar off.
This option is still there for the Windows version.

It looks like I had an extension adding this menu for 3.6 while Windows has this menu item per default plus a shortkey to toggle it on when the menu is hidden. I guess it is we don't want to use the alt key on Linux to show the menu. Unfortunately it means that Linux users have a UI that takes more space than Windows users.

AFAIK this is a Windows only feature. I haven't heard about Linux yet. Dao, is it something we want to support on Linux?

It's disabled on Linux since Alt wouldn't focus and show the menu bar (only a shortcut like Alt+F would).

Is that a bug on our side or isn't it simply not supported by Linux?

It's the way menus work on Linux.

Why not using a different shortkey than Alt on Linux?

Uses the Alt key alone to toggle the menubar and it works fine on Linux. Are there some sort of problem with the way it's implemented there?

I second this comment... I have been using the above extension in Linux for a quite a long time, and never experienced any negative effects. This is how the native functionality should work, IMHO.

Same problem on OpenSolaris. That add-on ( https://preview.addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4762 ) fixes the issue perfectly - it should be added to the trunk really.

Fixed by bug 585370. Menu bar can be hidden on Linux now.
Still no hold alt to show shortcut, however, that'd be another issue.
