I'm wanting to know when there are no addons of a given type installed. However, I'd like to do this without needing to load all the (unneeded) metadata.

About which type do we talk in detail? Jetpacks vs. XPI?

There's no real concept of XPIs as a whole - there's restart-less addons (jetpacks will be this) that use the type "bootstrapped", and the various other types such as: extension, theme, language, searchengine, plugin. The last two, for instance, don't use XPIs.

For the time being I think just use getAddonsByTypes and count the results.
