Details
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.2.3) Gecko/20100423 Ubuntu/10.04 (lucid) Firefox/3.6.3
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1.9) Gecko/20100423 Thunderbird/3.0.4
I have set up around 40 different filters using "list-id" as the filter category (having created it, since TB allows for custom headers to be set for filtering). However, these filters (as opposed to recipient-based filters, for instance) never work automatically (even if set to do so in the filter definition box). They do, however work if I click on "Run filters on folder", etc.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Create a filter using "list-id" as the custom header
2. Set the filter to run automatically
Actual Results:
The filter doesn't work automatically, but can be made to work if:
3. After receiving an e-mail that should have activated the filter, one clicks on "Run filters on folder" in the Tools menu.
Expected Results:
It should have run the filter automatically.
Perhaps this is an occurrence with all custom headers, and not just list-id.

This WFM on Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.5; en-US; rv:1.9.2.5pre) Gecko/20100427 Thunderbird/3.1b2.
Have you tried safe mode? (see https://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode for more information)
What does the filter log says ?
Component: General → Filters
Product: Thunderbird → MailNews Core

Not yet, will try.
> What does the filter log says ?
It only logs entries when run manually (or when run automatically based on a header like "From"). It does not log any entries when it is supposed to run automatically (upon "checking mail") based on list-id.

Tried safe mode. In the terminal, I get:

deliver mode: 7
deliver mode: 7
deliver mode: 7
deliver mode: 7
deliver mode: 7
deliver mode: 7
deliver mode: 0
deliver mode: 7
deliver mode: 7
deliver mode: 7
deliver mode: 0
deliver mode: 7
deliver mode: 0
deliver mode: 7
deliver mode: 7
deliver mode: 0
deliver mode: 0
deliver mode: 7

Nothing else (un)usual. And no, automatic filtering still isn't working.

James where else should we be looking ?
This bug is related to another bug (which I am currently unable to locate) due to which multi-line headers aren't parsed properly by the message filters. However, what is strange is that Thunderbird parses it properly when the filters are manually run, but doesn't do so when automatically run.
I managed to fix it by making the filter condition the first line of the list-id (something list "discussion list for xyz") instead of the second line (<lists.example.org>).
I hope that helps.
Maybe that multiline problem is bug 124641? That was in May 2011. Can you try the original problematic filter definition today in Thunderbird 7 or 8?
